Why not pop along to Mamucium. A semi reconstructed Roman fort in Castlefield. It tells the story of a glimpse of Roman Manchester.
How old are you mate?
Very interesting post, however missing a major influx.
No mention of the Argies influx 2008-2015.
Yea, this whole identity of "we're English, we're proud" and we've been Mancunian since the dawn of time is complete bollocks....
My Great Great Grandmother was an Irish settler in Manchester, eventually the council built Heywood as a Manc. Overspill and she moved there.
why is it complete bollocks if thats the case your great great grandmother being irish is a load of bollocks then because a lot of times immigrants moved to ireland. I dont understand this thought that we shouldn't have our own identity now. your ancestors were from irleand therefore you say they are irish, I'm born here therefore imo I'm english, depends how far you want to go back really ? no ones been anyone since the dawn of time, but i can trace my family back quite a bit far back therefore id consider myself english. there re plenty of people whos family go back hundreds of years in england, because the romans invaded 2,000 odd years ago does that mean they aren't english now ?
the majority of movement into manchester was from other places in england during the revolution, i wouldn't class that as immigration. Even with ireland which has been invaded by romans, vikings the english ( bringing christianity with them) how can anyone claim to be irish then if a lot of its past is built on people moving there.?
That's a strange interpretation of the thread. I thought people were illustrating Manchester's diversity through their own family histories. I would bet most of those posters of non-Manc descent are now proud Mancunians. Some people want to deny or wont acknowledge that Manchester has a rich history and to be a proud Mancunian is indeed something to be proud of. All this thread is showing is that some people think that immigrants are/were and will be more important than the Mancunians that have been, are and will be proud Mancunians. As you say you hear posters banging the drum about their Irish ancestors but forget to mention that you me or any given other person have ancestors going way back to Manchester.
When do 2nd 3rd 4th generation Mancunians start becoming just Mancunians without having to mention their entire DNA when self labelling?
