not sure if this is a valid point but if you look at the photo of when COMS was an athletics stadium then the roof was not one single structure, surely the roof at the ends can be removed whilst we build up the tiers and then a new roof put in place?
The roof itself isn't a single structure, but the wire line that supports it is.

Its not one continuous piece of wire though is it in the main rings there are joins aren't there ?.

i think my point got slightly lost in translation but when it was the athletics stadium the roof was 3/4 of the ground and was supported as such therefore surely there is no reason why the end can't be removed whilst we build up the tier?

That's what I thought, but some construction dude on here pointed out that the supports were still there even though the stand wasn't.

As you can see from those pics, the structure of the roof was already in place for the Games. It's just that the actual 'tiling/cladding' that keeps us dry wasn't.

I'm not saying i fully understand what Dubai blue posted about but if its a net of cabels that is actually the roof. We could probably rig some kind of counter pully system up to apply the right force to hold the roof up while we wip out a section of it and do some building work.

Sounds about right. People I know who were involved in building the stadium have tried explaining it to me, but it's never made much sense to me. Apparently any extension of the ends revolve around those two masts that you can see in the pictures I posted. They would need to be moved back (and presumably heightened) so as to take the extra strain. That would be the first thing they'd do as they've got to maintain the integrity of the rest of the roof. They'd then build underneath the heightened roof structure (as they did when constructing the North Stand). Removing the actual roof cladding isn't a problem at all; it's moving the wire supports without the rest of the roof caving in that is the challenge.

Or something!!

good photos those DB, certainly made my understanding of the situation a lot clearer.

tbh i still think that with the expertise we have on tap, plus of course the limitless finances, that it will be a doddle for our guys to sort out the expansion.

Oh it can be done; it'd just be a huge, very expensive and very time-consuming job for a total of 12,000 extra seats. I guess they might do it eventually, one end at a time.
