I think Brighton are being incredibly short sighted here - yes they’re trying to max out on the fee for Cucurella, and it looks like they’ve actually found someone desperate/stupid enough to pay it - but given all their talk about being a place for exciting young players to develop and show their talent before moving on to bigger and better, they’re really fucking Cucurella over here.

Agents and players will be be watching this with interest, and I’d imagine will be extremely reluctant to go there in future as they’ve shown their word simply can’t be trusted. At best, they’ll be hit with release clause demands before players sign for them, and at worst agents just won’t want to deal with them.

Either way - not our problem anymore. I’m just glad we’re out of the circus they’re creating around this now.

The fee isn't nonsense mate. Hanging onto one personal opinion at one point months ago by one ex-footballer with no connections to either club, is. You will notice that quite a few take the fee for what it is/was, whether it is guessed or informed.

10, 15 possibly as well. Which I said when we were involved too, it isn't just an exaggeration now Chelsea are going for it.

Reads like it is as much about the structure of Chelsea's bid as the amount.


We were never going to go that high. Easy to say just pay it, but it is the club's call at the end if the day and one they have generally got right many times over.

So all in all

Chelsea are getting two great players. Now they have a good team.

City did okay by sticking to their valuation. They did stupid in going after him as they would have known our valuation and their demand.

Brighton did fine too. They want a player. People are willing to spend stupid money on him so why not. Give him to the highest bidder.

Won’t blame Cucu to going to Chelsea either. Same money as City. London is a good City. Also City did not raise their offer despite him giving a transfer request.

So only one Team will come out weaker from this saga would be City, if we don’t buy a LB before the window closes.

Brighton through naylor have always said they want more than they got for white. I suspect they will do the deal around £55m. The cb from Chelsea is a separate transaction.

Brighton not being as smart as they think. Other clubs will be looking at the fee they received and the price for their player just went up. Players looking to use Brighton as a stepping stone will all want release clauses from now on. All very odd.
