Marseille (a) post match thread

Going back (again) to 2012, we had 4 top class strikers to call upon. Just Incase you need reminding, Sergio, Balo, Tevez and Big Ed. Not taking away from tonight’s performance but we need to sign an out and out goal poacher.
We only ever play one striker, and the club model is to have two top class players in each position with kids as understudies. You won’t get a striker of the requisite quality to join us and hardly play. What we need to do is replace Aguero and I think there’s an argument we should have done that in the summer, and maybe even let Sergio go. Don’t forget also, we need young players to see a route to the first team, or we get Jaden Sancho situations.

Great performance, best one of the year.

Looked so solid at the back, can really see the Dias benefit.

Final shout out to Jermaine Jenas, who was an excellent co-commentator on BT sport.
Jenas was a refreshing change from Keown and McMinimum. Every negative cue he was given by his dreary co commentator he made him look bitter by coming back with positives or dismissing his moronic drones about money spent etc.

Was a comfortable win against a terrible Marseille side.

I thought the central defence looked extremely solid with Dias excellent.

Full backs. - Walker decent enough. Zinchenko rusty as hell.

Rodri and Gundogan ridiculously negative. They keep possession, which has its merits but they never go anywhere with the ball. What makes it more frustrating is that in the 87th minute, Rodri pings a perfect 50 yard ball over the top to Mahrez, if you have that in your locker, fucking use it.

Foden and KDB both good. There’s so much pressure on those two to deliver because of Rodri and Gundogans lack of positivity in their play. We used to have 5 or 6 players playing every week who could create something, now we rely far too much on KDB and Foden.

Sterling and Torres both decent enough without ever reaching top gear.

Overall a professional CL performance but that midfield two will never be top class.
Not sure you were watching the same Gundogen as everyone else or the one that you have already made your mind up about?

I just mentioned Jenas in the media thread. He’ll probably get hooked now for not towing the BiTter party line.

Agree with this. Ian Darke wasnt too bad either, apart from the obligatory mention of our spending on defenders

Interesting to see the back 3 when we attack, Laporte-Dias-Walker with Rodri in front of them.

Zinchenko brings good control, even though he is suspect defensively. Could improve on his creation, he had chances to play somebody through but didn't, although many of our players I think had these chances and were kind of scared to do it.

Foden my MotM, energy, creating chances, possession he did everything.

Gundogan played further forward, this was NOT a midfield 2, instead Zinchenko helped Rodri more (and Walker). He is turning into an important player for goals apparentlly, nice to see.

Mahrez pass = Mahrez good, simple as that. Well he could run more too, but that's just not in him.
Also some impressive Sane-esque speed down the left flank. And showing the desire to take on and beat his man.

Liverpool have a top class front three yet got Jota fer just over 40 million who was happy to go there as an understudy. He is 23 and if he had come here in probably two years he would have been ready to step into Sergio's shoes.

What would everyone say our first choice 11 is now?

Jesus for Gundogan/Rodri and then Foden in the midfield 3 is probably what I would choose but haven't seen enough of Foden KBD in the two 8 positions to know if it really works.
Foden was brilliant out on the left today. First time it felt like the 2017/18 with the classic wingers. Bernardo in the center in David's old position

Will Pep ever have KDB, Foden and Bernie on the pitch at the same time ? A back four of Walker, Dias, Laporte and Ake looks rock solid to me. Then we could pair Bernardo and Rodri as deep lying midfield with KDB, Sterling, Foden and Gabby as the front four. Beat us if you can ?

I’m quite confused by this
