Metrolink to / from Etihad

Absolute shambles last night getting to the ground from the major railway station. Singles coming in absolutely rammed with maybe 15/20 people able to get on each time. Queuing back to the taxi rank from the tram platform is, frankly, pathetic. Most frustrating of all was SIX double trams coming in and then terminating at Piccadilly. European game and COOP live event and there’s more empty trams than full ones.
If Burnham thinks that’s acceptable he should attend a game/concert and travel from Piccadilly on the tram. He’s made driving and parking impossible, he’s got trams and buses competing for the same bit of roads and it’s an absolute shit show. The Germans in the queue were somewhat bemused by our total lack of transport options for getting there.
At least the Über drivers made a few quid…
Don't expect that Scouse twat Burnham to sort it out his main priority is providing shelter for the homeless (Druggies, Beggars, Layabouts) and doesn't give a toss about trannsport.

It shouldn’t be either or, he can do more than one thing.
Wrong thread for this I know but, if you think homelessness is always a choice and that they’re all druggies, beggars and layabouts, I hope your life never falls apart in such a way that you can’t control what happens to you.

I doubt rational people select the tram for 2-stop travel between the City centre and the Etihad stadium.

Travel to the ground on the tram is fine as its reasonably staggered , otherwise fans wouldn't do it .Its a football ground with a 50 000+ crowd , so it will be busy and crowded . Like any other transit system. I've never had a problem getting the tram to City, and I cut it it fine. Maybe don't go from Pic/Pic Gardens.
City have one tram stop . Its a 20 minute , flat easy walk back into town , thousands do it . I wouldn't attempt the tram afterwards , because of the long queues .
There's a whole choice of express buses going to further afield areas in Greater Manchester, north Cheshire , etc waiting on Ashton New Road and the Phillips Park side , as well as loads of buses waiting to take fans into town generally on Ashton New Road . One of my kids uses these express buses which are a joint arrangement between Bee Network and Manchester City to West Didsbury . I think it goes onto Wythenshawe , could be wrong. He says its a good service.

The transport for fans , regardless of the queues for the tram is getting better. . The ground is nearer to town than Maine Road .
If you've done Arsenal , Tottenham , Chelsea , Brighton , United , Liverpool , Everton, Forest , Leeds, Villareal away you'll get what Im saying .

You sound like a wrong un . In fairness take us through your transport problems to the Bournemouth and Dortmund games you had , and what pearls of travel wisdom have you got for the Liverpool game ? Do you actually go to City games ?

The tram line was (eventually) built to service 35-40k people. Since then we have added another 15k, soon to be more.
The council have placed parking restrictions all over the area as they want to encourage people to use public transport and yet didn't improve the tram.
The club and other business partners built a huge concert arena at the same tram stop ...... but didn't improve the tram service.
Further, it isn't about the 20-25 minute walk back into town. Once there try getting on a tram. I managed it on Wednesday from Peters Square but it left Blues and other users behind as it was rammed. From then on it was a struggle for people to get on at Deasgate and Cornbrook.
I know London clubs have a problem, that doesn't mean we have to accept our shite service.
All we want is for them to run a sensible system. Doubles on match days that don't terminate (going) at Piccadilly and extra trams coming back.

The only infrastructure changes I have read about that will improve the situation for the campus in any way are the proposed Sandhills stop mooted for opening 2030/31 (and even that isn’t guaranteed funds yet) which will be a 1.5 mile walk away (similar to Piccadilly distance but only really beneficial for Bury line travellers as it means avoiding the city centre), power station upgrades and new trams. Although the latter should be balanced with the fact that some of the existing trams are reaching end of life.

So we have a wait for anything substantial to change but the new City Square might at least help reduce overcrowding after matches as people hang around (assuming there are places to eat/drink). I think the buses they’re laying on are our best bet for the next decade or so and it should be expanded.

I have said before that it’s a pity they didn’t turn-round the Piccadilly terminating trams at New Islington at a 3rd platform there instead of just after the station. It’s just over half the distance that Piccadilly is.

They could turn them round between the Etihad and the Velopark stop as they already have the extra rail and points there.

Thought this was a good summary of the situation and possible developments... all the way to 2040/50 :-(

It was interesting. Not really sure they'd be a huge demand for the Guide Bridge to Stockport line? But as it's already a passenger line, it may not need a huge amount of investment to bring it up to scratch for a more regular service.

Similarly with making the Altrincham line more frequent. Certainly make travel between Altrincham and Stockport easier but would there be a huge demand for people going into town? They've got a regular tram service and unlike say the Eccles to Manchester tram, which takes about three times as long as the train, the tram and train from Altrincham take pretty much the same time.
