Oleks Zinchenko - 2018/19 Performances

I’d much prefer Zinchenko to Mendy. Zinchenko has grown into the role and has played really well in his last few games. Mendy does not fill me with confidence ... he’s great as an attacking wing back but I’ve never seen him defend well or even track back to help at the back.

In 32 appearances for the club, Zinchenko has accrued an astonishing 30 wins (including four penalty shootout victories in the League Cup). He has yet to taste defeat domestically, ending up on the winning side in all 27 of his league and cup games.

His only reverse in City colours so far is a 2-1 loss to Basel in last season's Champions League, while he also featured in the 2-2 draw with Lyon in this season's group stage.

I think all the games he played for City were at LB position, therefore do you @Dax777 think he is good enough to be 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice LB ?

Or he will never be good LB for City ?

There's a short piece on Zinchenko on the BBC Sport website today, which includes these stats.

He can and should eventually at Leftback. But nothing should be given to him. He has to earn it. I think he'll eventually turn out a better Leftback than Mendy, unless these injury conditions subside.

It feels like this is another Zaba v Micah unfolding before our eyes. The athletically superior guy with game changing capabilities who everyone deemed the starter eventually loses out to the consistent and ever improving player who stayed healthy and got the PT.

Zaba's offense finally caught up to his amazing defense. Zee's defense will eventually eclipse catch up to his O. I predict there will come a time when many will want Zee starting over Mendy in big games because they believe we are more secure with him defensively. When that happens his legitimacy will be complete.

Right now he is enjoying a purple patch. Delph had a season long version of this. So I'm not impressed yet. When he starts benching a healthy Mendy, then we can talk :)

The best thing about him is he backs himself, he could have easily left in the summer. He stayed on and he has done everything to make sure he is ready to go if Pep needs him and Pep has. He is similar to Zaba in that he isn't particularly athletic or tall or the best defender in the world but he makes up for it in grit and determination. He is never going to be in this position again, part of a winning squad with world class players and he is taking full advantage of it.

He is very skilful on the ball and very clever with his passing. Not sure in which position he will end up but has done very well recently. What a brilliant piece of business by City signing him for just £1.8m.

He deserves so much credit. We tried to sell him, imagine if we had. Who would have played those games Zinchenko has? Laporte might have played some, Delph might have managed a couple more but it would have been Danilo predominantly and that would have run Walker into the ground even further, he has already suffered from too many games.

For Zinchenko to stay, fight for his place and keep performing has been vital to our seasons efforts. He isn't a left back and his pace is probably the reason why he will not stay in that position after the summer transfer window, but his ability on the ball means he could fulfil a midfield spot in my opinion.

The trouble is, I don't think Pep will reward his efforts with a new contract and we will still look to sell him on.

I will be utterly amazed if Pep doesn't offer him a new contract.

He'll certainly be offered an extension. The question is - will he accept? He's not quite talented enough to be first choice at any position in our squad - yet he's talented enough to be first choice in many top-flight teams.

I see your point but think he would definitely accept. He clearly loves being at City...just watch some of the "Inside City" videos and playing for a trophy winning club. The determination to stay he showed last summer when City were so close to selling him says a lot. If I am wrong then I'll buy you a drink of your choice....haha!!!.

I hope you're right.

Oleks is an important member of our squad - contributing to depth. I'd love for him to stay.

I'd offer him a 6 year deal with performance incentives so if things go well he's earning on a par with Bernardo. We need to maintain a good squad into the future so we need a core of capable players. They don't all need to be superstars.

There's a minimum standard and imo Zinchecko meets it. It questionable if Walker or Mendy do. They are the guys that we should be thinking of replacing.
