I cant help but feel the PL really want to lose this case, the fallout if they were to win would be huge. For starters they would be setting a precident of investigating clubs over a long term basis, in addition to us they are currently looking at Everton, the red tops will be pushing for Newcastle to be very closely monitored. The Rags have now been fined by Uefa and as such surely there is a duty for the PL to investigate them as well, Chelsea are spunking money on long term contracts and huge deals, again it would seem reasonable to have a good look at them as well. ou have to wonder how Arsenal are funding some of their deals as well.
You then bring in the new FFP rules that will have to be monitored and the whole thing becomes a minefield. We havent even touched on the legalities of any punishments etc..
I think these are really quite a lot of different things.
Everton failed PL FFP but will make representations on what can be discounted to minimise how much they overspent by during the covid years.
MU were a minor overspend (whatever that entails) of UEFA FFP during covid years; yes the PL will probably have a look, but they look at everyone's FFP accounts anyway, so this isn't new.
Chelsea haven't failed FFP currently, that may come in a couple of years when the 3 year cycle comes round.
City are being investigated for not providing accurate accounts (as a simple summary, it's a lot of things) in the past.
It's like comparing apples and pears and other apples.
They'll need a lever to investigate anyone in the way City are being investigated.
