Prague

Any recommendations on the best part of the city to stay in please. Thinking of going for a few days in early December as I am going back in to retirement
We stayed in the old town last April at the Roma Hotel . Great hotel in a great location.

It’s all cobbled streets and old / rustic . Across the river if that’s the old town it’s more modern and not a nice imo . Huge cathedral near us with an Irish bar around the corner , JJ Bailey,s ! Cracking full English breakfast there !

I think it would be a mistake to look for a certain pub or restaurant. There are thousands of good places and each of us has a different taste.

Use your common sense. Beer over 80 Czk is a turist trap. I rate pilsner urguell as the best beer in the world. But there are many others that are really nice too.

If you insist on going to places that have a history try U tygra in the city centre. Top beer and full of locals.

Generally people speak english but with terrible accent. Enough to get by.

If WW2 rocks your boat go to a military museum in Zizkov.

PM me if you want specific advice. We can meet for a pint :-)

Across the river from where you stayed in Mala Strana is the Old Town and the New Town. Old Town is old and beautiful. New Town more modern and still has some nice parts but not as beautiful.

Most tourists tend to stick to the route from Old Town across Charles Bridge to Mala Strana and up to the castle area but there are some other nice areas too.

Prague is small enough that no matter where you stay really you can walk most places if you are anywhere near the Centre. As some have said the closer to the old town you are the more expensive things get.

I spent a year and half in Prague working and lived in Andel. Couple of stops on the underground, not that big a walk to the old town, loads of bars and restaurants around there and half the price you pay in the old town. Just another option.

Stayed at the Hotel Salvator recently, which is about a 10-min walk from the main square.

Nice little hotel, staff are friendly and I was even able to pre-book a taxi transfer with them from the airport.

We stayed in a neighbourhood near to the Stromovka Park. It was a really nice area and park with a few local bars and restaurants to choose from.

It was a 15-20 minute walk to the centre or a short tram ride.

The area was fantastic if you want to go to bakeries, restaurants, coffee shops or bars that are mainly used by local Czech people.

Stayed at Hotel Archibald under the Charles Bridge and (one) close to the Vlatava river . It’s 4* and everything in the centre is walkable….. except I was extremely poorly during my stay. Rooms were very comfortable though- spent enough time curled up in the bed.

My sister enjoyed it.
If the Mrs is into jewellery Prague is the place for rubies. Got conned into buying a present for sister’s 60th.

Hotel is near John Lennon’s wall, which is err… a wall covered in graffiti inspired by JL.

Between hotel and Charles bridge is an open bricked area. I think they use it for Xmas markets. But it was October when we went.
