Ref Watch City Games - 2023/24

I think Akanji falls into this offside law:
  • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
He’s in an offiside position and almost steps over the ball which impacts the keeper’s dive. Keeper hesitates because he thinks Akanji might play the ball.

I don’t think VAR would ask Oliver to look at it, aren't offsides the decision of VAR?
He has to be interfering in the opinion of the ref, if VAR has a different opinion the ref's has primacy. VAR makes the decision if the player touches it, but not interfering decisions.

Just like the one when we were robbed at OT which was worse and no VAR. Newcastle got one chalked off against us like this in 2014/15 but people on here claimed it should have been given. We will get some against us so may as well take this one.

I don’t think he clearly impacts on the keeper though. Funny how Twatwell didn’t think Rashford impacted on Manu’s ability to play the ball last season. Slightly different scenario I know but it shows how it’s all about interpretation. Leno should have tried to stop the ball rather than expect an offside decision to go his way.

To be fair to Leno he waited to see if Akanji was going to touch it before diving, that split second hesitation cost him. I think as good as the players are they still act on instincts in the blink of an eye. Leno wouldn’t have known for sure in that rapid movement that Akanji was offside.

If Oliver didn’t think he was interfering he gets the final decision over VAR it seems.

Akanji was interfering but we’re owed one from OT last season, just God righting his wrong.

The overriding thing is to get the decision right with VAR surely, all these extra little rules they have is just confusing.

But as we all know, VAR is fucked.

I just think Leno hesitated in his dive as Akanji lifted his leg, I don’t think offside was even entering Leno’s thinking at that point.

Still mad about that Rashford one. For me it was more Ederson that was affected by Rashford.

Take Rashford out of that^ incident and Ederson doesn’t stand here like this, he’d have run out and cleared it. But because Rashford was there, he stood still expecting a Rashford shot. Clearly impacted by the offside player’s actions.

But I think yesterday’s is the same kind of thing
  • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

Probably shouldn't have counted but there you go.

One things sure as night follows day it'll get loads of air time to cover 'evening up' but against a red shirt we're not having that goal stand.

Thought Oliver was his usual self, any sort of contact was a free kick for them...he wasn't acting the same when we were in possession.

The guidance I'd seen was this one. Where the shot has come from the player in the top right of the picture, just inside the box. As you can see the player in the offside position is jumping out of the way of the ball, but they say they have to consider offside as he's "close" to the ball.

The decision that IFAB say is correct is that as the keeper can see the ball, he doesn't need to delay.

I don't think that's true, but I suspect it's a way to try and take the subjectivity out of the decisions.

Couldn't make it yesterday so watched it on Slovak TV. Commentators and pundits all thought the goal should have stood and I agree with them.

Updated bb4tm scores.

Thought he was a picky fucker. I'm amazed it was 12 fouls each side on the stats. The 'goal' is down to VAR. Therefore one of his better performances in our games which isn't a high bar.

Jones 1 game 3 out of 5
Pawson 1 game 5 out of 5
Gillett 1 game 3.5 out of 5
Oliver 1 game 4 out of 5
