Running thread

Update on my previous posts about using gels in a marathon. I dug out my old notes and records and it turns out that I took on gels at mile 6, 12 and 17 in the successful marathon. This actually concurs with stuuuuuuuu advice....

Sorry if i mislead anyone. The marathons were over 7 years ago....... Everything else I posted was correct though. I certainly used gels sparingly during training.

Anyone able to advise on why my heart rate jumps really high as soon as I start running up to mid 160’s and then after 1/2ks suddenly drops down to 130ish in an instant. Does it pretty much every time I run. Attached a pic of my heart rate chart of my last run. Is it normal for it be like that? View attachment 4141
As it drops vertically could it be your watch isn't accurate? Wrist based monitors are never 100% I've read. Try the watch on the other wrist or make sure firmware is up to date etc

I’ve tried 3 different devices and one was one the ones that goes around your chest. All show the same thing. I’m on an Apple Watch series 5 now so presume they are relatively accurate.

I wouldn’t know it goes so high as I feel no different, only see it on the analysis of my run.

Seems impossible mate. Your monitor is most likely inaccurate.

After 15 hill-only sessions I was back on the flat this morning.

Cracking 5k followed by 2 fast 600m splits in the park.

Felt great all the way round. The hill is such a top training tool.

Has the device that you've mapped the data to been the same?

Dublin virtual today, 3hr42. My third virtual mara in four weeks, heavy legs at the end but got it done and back in time for the match
Almost 4 hrs of running seems mental. Longest time I've run is 1hr 17.. how do you feel after? Do you snooze? Have jellylegs etc?

It is mental in fairness mate!! Its kind of a mix after, takes a while to calm the mind, no chance of a snooze, whilst it seems so attractive when doing the run!!
Its all about refueling and treating the body right when you finish, if I can do it anyone can

How did your running escalate into long distance? And what age?

I'm in two minds... I'm 39.. got into running at late 36. Spent first half at 5k and now comfortable at 10k.. did 12k ok last week.. not sure if doing longer distances or faster 10k appeals..

You have years on me mate, I had never run distance at all up until my 40th birthday party when I told everyone i would be running marathons in my 40s, I was 15 stone and smoked 30 a day, everyone wet emselves.
Started doing parkruns once a week then a few 10ks everynow and again. Lockdown this year changed it all for me, inspired by folk that run everyday, i started doing at least 3 miles a day, which i still do, Im down to 12 stone and no longer smoke, did a 28 mile run after 30 days of running everyday, now have 5 marathons in the bag and love it. Im 44 and am fitter than Ive ever been. You just have to want it mate, better to be someone who does it, rather than someone who talks about doing it.
Go for it pal, you wont regret it

How I felt after my recent half.
God knows what I’ll feel like after a full marathon!

quick question: started tentatively training for a marathon next year (no rush just dipping into the water slowly).

my rough training plan is to do 2-3 shortish runs a week followed by a longer one.
Looking at a half marathon a month ago it’s 15k’s for the other three weeks.

last night I ran a 15.6km in 1hr22 - pace felt perfect (actually felt slower than it was). Mind you it was pissing down and with the combination of puddles I was completely drenched.

worth doing a short recovery run today?
Legs aren’t bad at all really and given the nice weather I fancy a bit of a trek (5/6k).

Good idea?

If you want to race 10K or improve your 10K time then you will benefit by running a distance longer and slower in training at least once a week......say 14K. This will improve stamina and help maintain speed towards the end of the 10K.

If seemed to work for me and caused my distances to esculate so that I improved my 10k time when training for half marathon and my half marathon time when training for full marathon.

When marathon fit, the 10k becomes a walk in the park :)

I was probably as fit as ever in my mid 40s whilst marathon training.
