Running thread

Early start again this morning folks, up and out for 6.30am and I've just completed my first half marathon!

Wouldn't say I intended to go that far, was thinking of going up to about 15k, but I felt good and the weather was just perfect, so I just powered on and managed to get round in 2 hours and 15 minutes

My airpods bailed on me about half way round which was a bit of a blow, but I managed to grab a lucozade and some haribo half way round which perked me up!

Now to find a way to recover!!
Amazing effort mate

3rd ever Parkrun today and a PB! 29.07 Parkrun time and 13th in VM55-59 category. Quite pleased with my progress. Really feeling it on 3.5km and wanting so badly to stop but obviously didn’t. I’m hoping it gets progressively easier. Any tips on how to avoid or prolong the agony?? Like not doing it in the first place, perhaps! :-)

Did you do Peel again today ?

Based on your time I would say there’s a good possibility ! I did 30.18 and was 14th in age category so would be next after you.

There is a part of the back loop which is uneven and I find not easy to run on. There was a visually impaired runner just in front of me. He did well.

Yes I did. The blind guy and his helper lady just overtook me on the way to the finish line at the final turn. Haha we must run at exactly the same pace! I was in black shorts, plain navy top but with knee brace and two calf compression socks on. Obligatory for FOC’s :-) I’m going to Wolves next week but going on Friday night and doing Parkrun in Stafford Sat morning.
Up the Blues!

That's some going.

Fair fucks fella. Keep her lit.

Started back running three weeks ago, It's been a while!

I am off drink over 2 years now and as a result have been eating more...Putting on a bit of timber!

Got myself a 5k app as a beginner again, Was doing 3k walking/jogging in 28 mins, The last couple of days started doing 5k walking/jogging...

5k is taking me 42 mins...I used to be able to so 5k in just over 20 mins, Shows how unfit I am, Just need to keep at it.

Well done mate and keep up the good work!

Try not to put too much emphasis on the time, just get out there and enjoy it

Well done mate. And well done on quitting the booze. It ruins so many lives that stuff, and not just the lives of the ones drinking it either.

Cheers fella.

Looking for a few tips, you're correct about the emphasis on time, I was constantly looking at the times on my phone whilst I was running to see how I'm getting on, suppose just trying to beat the time I got previously...

I went out yesterday morning and didn't use any apps, I just listened to music and done was I could and I enjoyed it more.

Starting off as basically a beginner again, any tips on how many days a week you'd recommend running, should I be doing it every day or every second day?

My aim is to be able to do 5k in a decent time, should I be looking to complete 5k when I'm going out even if its walking and running or just do what I can do?

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi mate.

I guess it depends what other fitness activities you are involved in and how much time you have available.
Personally, I'm retired so time isn't an issue. My current routine is 3 swims a week, 2 runs a week and 2 recovery days. I prioritise the swimming as it gives me better results in terms of weight loss, and in summer it's not time dependent (i.e. no need to avoid excessive temperatures).
For my runs, I use no tech, and just run at a comfortable pace and try to enjoy it. I love using all my senses so don't use headphones, but like to take in all the sights, sounds and smells of nature and the changing of the seasons.
When it's cool enough, I factor in a few speed intervals, and I always attempt a sprint finish at Parkruns!
My biggest tip is just to enjoy it, listen to your body, and don't overthink your runs.
That's some going fella, fair play!

I have time in the mornings, I get a run in before I go to work, I could go every morning if I wanted to, I went 4 days in a row last week and I made a mistake, my calves were in bits (as you've mentioned listen to your body) I didn't listen and paid the price, walking around work I'd say people thought I had an accident and didn't make it to the toilet!

Your runs seem alot more relaxed and laid back than mine, I think I'm overthrowing things and putting too much pressure on myself. I'll take your kind words of wisdom on board and see where it takes me hopefully helps me loosen out.

Cheers for the tips, much appreciated.

Thank You.

And probably stating the obvious a little, but do stretches before and after your runs, warm up, cool down and hydrate!
Yeah I do all my stretches before and after, I do a 5 minute warm up and cool down after my run, I hope I know what I'm doing as I've been doing that sort of stuff playing football for years, I think and hoping that it's been so long since I ran so much my body and legs isn't used to it, I took a day break after the 4 day consecutive running and felt good back to normal.

I always bring water with me too to stay hydrated.

I'll be a course marshall at the Isabel Trail Parkrun in Stafford on Saturday morning so give me a wave.
I won't know which marshall point I'm going to be allocated until Saturday morning though.
Great. That’s the one I’m doing. I’ll have to wear a City shirt now so you can spot me! Think I’ll go for this class maroon number. IMG_2558.jpeg

Cheers fella.

I think trying to constantly trying to beat your quickest time is a sure fire way to eventually picking up an injury

There are certainly people more experienced than me in this group that can help you build up your speed, but I've always taken on board that bits of speed work (fast pace 30 secs walk 30 secs for example) will build up your speed, also incline running, and then believe it or not, slow long distance runs will build up your ability to run quicker for longer

Personally, I'm not a 5k runner, can't stand the stuff, so when I do one (like yesterday) I tend to hate every kilometre as it takes me 4k to sort my breathing out!

You're more likely to catch me running 10k+ but at a nice Conservative pace where I can relax and enjoy it

Each to their own of course it just depends what you're trying to get from running
