I don't have a phone, smart or otherwise, it's not that I'm a technophobe, I simply don't have a use for one and I don't see why I should have to buy one just to go to a football match when the club could just provide me with a card.

Wasn't at the Everton game so didn't experience the e-ticket entrance etc. Do you just download the e-ticket to your phone beforehand and then swipe it. i.e. like a flight boarding pass/train ticket. Or do you need internet connection when swiping in. I ask as the internet connection is flakey at best at the stadium.

You need a phone that supports NFC so that you can have Google Pay or Apple Pay on it. NFC doesn't need WiFi, Bluetooth or a phone signal.

Sorry to ask this, but as an “old boy”…
if you have a ticket on your phone, can you forward it to another person / phone ?

All depends on how city implement it. The etickets for the champions league final were 100% transferable, all you needed was an app and an email address.

If it's by Google/apply pay I'm not sure how it could work

The increase in testicular cancer since we all started putting mobiles in our pockets, its around a 20% increase since 2005. Not saying its a direct link but that stat always makes me think there might be something in the conspiracy theories, as thats a big increase that they havent been able to explain
