Star Wars VII

JJ Abrams puts out consistently good stuff, but never great stuff. I wish Matthew Vaughn had got the job and some creative freedom.

I liked Force Awakens. Plot holes are a tradition in Star Wars. My only character complaints are that Ren was lame as a bad guy and Rey was a bit Mary Sue.
She knew more about the Millennium Falcon in 10 minutes than its actual owner who spent years piloting it. At least she was likeable unlike creepy Anakin. What was the point of Ren raging out every 2 minutes he was on screen? Dude needs anger management counseling. An average jedi could kill this guy by provoking him into an apoplectic fit. Maybe that's his final training. Finn and Han Solo humanized the whole thing.

Having another exhaust pipe on a super sized version of the Death Star was super lame. And it wasn't even defended despite being a weapon that could potentially end the conflict. A whole planet relying on shields with 3 TIE fighters to defend it. Dumb.

Defeating the remnants of the Empire will never be as epic as actually defeating the Emperor and Vader.

Not sure Star Wars is Matthew Vaughn's type of film.

Also as for Ren he was very much like Anakin Skywalker when he turned to the dark side to become Vader, whether intentional or not that's the impression I got.

As a 'story', it was weak and unsupported by a decent sub plot, which makes it even more glaringly weak as a 'story'!

A fact I could now forgive George Lucas for! For years I thought the general writing for 'Star Wars' was tripe and 'VII' changes nothing!!

To be fair I thought VII was a great platform to build on, I can tell the only reason the original cast was involved was to tie up some loose ends
The moment with Han Solo was long over due and his character should have been killed off in Return of the Jedi when Harrison Ford asked George Lucas to do it
I wouldn't be surprised if we saw less screen time of the old cast in the next film.
I think given the background stories J.J. Abrams had to deal with and the fact Disney trashed George Lucas' original scripts what they had to deal with in only a 2hr and a bit film was done really well instead of dragging it out into episode VIII, I think this is why in parts of the film it almost felt rushed.

Was when Rey easily beat Kylo Ren with ease at the end, even though he's been Jedi trained by Luke Skywalker and had vast experience with the force yet she only just found out about the force and it's powers and plus the fact she's just a scavenger with no Jedi training. At least in the Empire Strikes Back when Luke and Vader fight it out, Vader's experience trumps Luke's inexperience thus leads to Luke losing an arm and being left mortally wounded and defeated by Vader

It's not Richard III though, it's just a kids film!

yeah... (I'm maybe papering over a crack our two here), but we saw that Ren can't control his anger and Chewbacca had inflicted a pretty big injury on him with his blaster. Marry that up against Rey having natural fighting skills as shown on Jakku, showing incredible instincts when piloting the Falcon, and has just seen this guy for all she knows murder her best friend.
If I had just got wind of some life changing powers, I too would be like, "come on then, you fucking clown".
She could also be so powerful that she is this prophesied one who brings balance to the force, not Anakin or Luke. Maybe that's why she was hidden away.

In that context, entirely believable!

Also during the interrigation scene, we see that Rey is able to not only repel Ren's attempts at drawing out her thoughts but also turn it back on him and drawing out his deepest inadiquaces. The same thisn is implyed when Ren attempts to retrive Luke's lightsaber, Rey is able to not only prevent him from doing so but claim it for herself. I thinks this is the main reason she is able to best Ren, in ecense she is able to nullify an apponents force power and use it for herself

another 'theory' is that Rey has the ability to learn force skills by seeing (feeling) others use them. Explains most of how she does what she does apart from the mind trick...although when she got inside Rens head perhaps she 'learned' it from there..

I think the films title sort of explains why
why Rey could channel the force, his interigation awakens her latent powers, and in their battle when Ren says he will train her in the force and she closes her eyes, I would say she realising she is strong.with it is channeling the force to help her defeat him much like Luke. Also she hints at that she used the falcon to play in an mess with the controls while growing up when Finn asks if she pilot it

It still doesn't explain how she could suddenly learn all these powers. Also what of Finn? He uses a saber and takes on a sith toe to toe, surely he's force sensitive. I felt the Poe character would be more a Han Solo type.

well on Finn other people in the cannon use of wield light sabers, General grievas and Pre Vizla for example, and also his first fight with it is v a stormtrooper with a sword light side weapon, so Finn is probably trained at combat skills with more than just a blaster. As for the force, As it flows through everything and those strong in it can channel its powers and feed off previous jedi's experiences. Like someone said Ren was injured and she just see hom kill Solo and possibly Finn, When you watch Jedi luke is at his most powerful in the lightsaber battle when he thinks Vader will go after his sister and emotions are running high much like hers "]

So is 'Cinderella'!

Respect your audience!

By the way, I'm surprised how forgiving people have been, working out the possibilities of scenes unexplained by the writers/ director!

Why do we have to do so much guess work...?

I'd rather they have delayed the film and got the arc right, than this er, luke-warm toe tester!
