Terry racism trial, this is going to get nasty

Yes, it does. Context is everything when dealing with potentially racist language.

Not sure who alerted the authorities, to be honest. But as the conversation involved Anton Ferdinand, his views on the matter are obviously important.

My understanding, I'm by no means legal so feel free to correct me is a member of the public complained after JT called Af 'a fucking black ****'. Now what difference does it make to that member of the pubic who took offence the context of the conversation/shouting match between AF and JT????

He used that language, people got offended, he's guilty as far as I'm concerned

The case is now 'The Crown vs John Terry'. The person who reported it is no longer relevant.

If you were sat in the pub and said to your mates, "I was in the supermarket the other day and some horrible chavvy scumbag called the cashier a dirty fucking Paki. I couldn't believe it," you obviously shouldn't be treated in the same way as the person who actually called her "a dirty fucking Paki."

You've both used the same racist language but the context is quite clearly different. That's what John Terry's lawyers are trying to argue.

Fair enough but one thing I would say is that he wasn't having a conversation, he was shouting it across a football field with 25k people watching, for that he needs to be taking responsibility of his actions. Perhaps a apology after the game would have been a start

Terry: 'I just want to make clear, Jenny [Kennedy, FA], that I have nothing to hide whatsoever. And I have seen the footage after the event'

Terry to FA: "i know i am being filmed when i say those words...you can say it doesn't look good but in the context..."

Jenny Kennedy (FA) to Terry: 'Most people would say it wasn't very sensible to say the words [f****** black c***] back [to Ferdinand]'

Terry says he could get 2000 witnesses to say he's no racist "It's not my character inside or out"..

Terry: 'Whether it's Spanish or Ivory Coast players, I welcome them into the club & into my home'

His statement seems to suggest he was actually having a conversation with Ashley Cole.

It was obviously stupid of him to use that sort of language in full view of so many people, and I'm sure he now wishes he'd chosen his words more wisely. IF he's telling the truth, he doesn't really have anything to apologise for, but I agree he could have handled the situation a bit better once he realised AF had made no such accusations about him.

He could have come out and said it was all a big misunderstanding and that he was sorry for any offence that was caused. He probably would have done as well had someone not thought it would be a laugh to report it to the police.

where he and his brother would try to shag their wives, his dad would try to sell them cocaine and his mum would try to steal their belongings...

Beat me to it!

I hate the line 'I'm friends with black people, so I'm not racist'

What a prick.

With regards to 'the context', I've a feeling this is why Terry (or rather his representation) are making a big point about him being 'shocked' in the first place.

Using that line it lays the foundations of his defence and automatically sets out Terry's state of mind ie not focussed and not thinking straight as opposed to being in a calm and collected one, his response with the former in mind I would see as perfectly acceptable, where as the latter it wouldn't.

Personally I think they'll take into account that it's in 'the heat of the moment' and not see it as evidence of racial abuse, if I'm right then it's been very well played.

Blimey if that proves guilt than most of the population is in trouble
