The Boxing thread

The Khan v McCloskey deal is not dead yet. They are still talking and a deal could well be reached in the next 48 hours. This comes from 1 of the boxing jurnos over here who has been bang on with the info he gets. It seems the Khan team booked the MEN thinking that Peterson would sign up straight away but it now seems that Paulie could well still get the shot. Sky dropped a ball here comfirming Khan over a Haye v Klitschko fight when most people would of wanted to see Haye v Klitschko fight before any Khan fight.

I'm inclined to agree with this. They should've at least waited for Khan to confirm his opponent before confirming the date. Schoolboy stuff.

Mayorga is one funny man, but Cotto should beat him pretty easily.

I saw this yesterday, tbh I think Mayorga's shit talking game has passed its sell by date. Some of the stuff he used to come out with was hilarious, yesterday he didn't seem to faze Cotto at all. Quite the opposite actually, I'd say Cotto won the war of words. He'll win the fight as well.

Andy Lee has got a replacement for John Duddy he will now face Craig McEwen on the undercard of the Sergio Marthinez fight on the 12th of March. I wonder if Sky will now show this fight card. First time to see McEwen on a big card and against Andy Lee a Irish v Scottish clash should be a good fight and whoever wins is a step closer to a World title fight maybe against Marthinez.

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view...Carl-Froch-set-for-world-title-show-in-London

DAVID Haye and Carl Froch could fight on the same London bill this summer with both British boxers defending their world titles.
Haye is set to take on Russlan Chagaev in the third defence of his WBA world heavyweight title on May 21, as Froch defends his WBC world super-middleweight crown against Glen Johnson.
Despite lengthy negotiations, Haye has missed out on a clash with fellow world title holders, the Klitschko brothers Vitali and Wladimir, and will instead fight former world champion Chagaev.
Chagaev, 32, suffered the only defeat of his career against Wladimir in 2009, but has nothing like the crowd appeal of the Ukrainian siblings, while Froch knows victory over Jamaican Johnson will catapult him into the ‘Super Six World Series’ final, a Showtime TV-backed tournament to decide the best 12-stone fighter in the world.

The thing is, you just know that Sky would make Haye the main event if that ever happened. Which would be bullshit.

How is it bullshit if Haye main evented over Froch? As far as I know Froch has yet to strike his own deal with Sky yet so in a way Haye is doing him a favour by putting him on his bill. Dont forget Haye is now the big ticket seller for Sky and not a lot of the casual fans would know a lot of Froch. I see this a good thing for Froch if he can tap into those fans that watch Haye it can only be a good thing for him. Froch on his own in a PPV wouldnt get the numbers. IS the Froch fight going on in the UK? I thought it was going to be in the US. No matter were it is who is to say that SKY will show the Froch fight. Dont beleive a word that come out of Ringside about doing everything to get them to sign up they missed the boat big time. Imagine the amount of money they could have made with Froch from the Super 6 figths alone Froch would of been a PPV star by now. IF he goes to Sky they will have to put him on normal Sky and build up a following and then hope he gets to the Final and try and do a PPV fight.

It's bullshit because Haye still hasn't fought a top class opponent in his career whilst Froch takes on the big guns every time he steps in the ring.

Why would Froch have to fight on normal Sky to build up a following? Haye went straight onto PPV for the Valuev fight, Froch vs Johnson is a much better propostiton. All Froch has to do is appear on EVERY chat show in the UK for about 3 months like Haye did, job done.

I agree with this. Haye will win the day because he's a Heavyweight and his arrogance is oddly mistaken for charisma.

Froch used to fight on Sky anyway. He's more than put his hours in fighting on Friday fight night.

Sky will be showing it anyway. They've got the rights to the Super Six semi's. Primetime haven't.

Good news if Sky got the rights to the semi finals but it needs to be on normal Sky Froch isnt the name and with him being on Primetime not a lot of people have seen his last couple of fights. When Haye was on Setanta more people seen them compared to Primetime also if they are down to the semi finals isnt the both semi finals on the same night in the US?

Don't think it is on ppv. Pretty sure it's just regular Sky mate. I hope so anyway.

The thing is conor Sky will see this as a way of promoting Froch. Froch probably would of given Calzaghe a real fight and maybe of won but he has never got the publicity his talent deserves, but the only way they can get people to watch him on PPV is if he is seen by people watching Haye who dont really know all the people in boxing. If you go outside now and ask the next 10 people who Froch is and then who Haye is who do you think they will know more? And that is simple PPV numbers that Sky use when promoting fighters

Your not the only 1. I think if it is in the US and a stand alone fight a PPV wont be worth doing for Sky so it is best that Froch goes back to fighting on normal Sky. You have to look at this way not every World Champion is PPV standard. So far you have Haye , Khan , Froch and Ricky Burns and I would guess not that many people will pay to watch a Burns or Froch fight. Also add into this if it is a good year for fighters in the UK you could have a couple more world champions be it Cleverly , Del Boy Chisora if he beats Wlad , Macklin* , Ryan Rhodes , McCloskey* , John Murray , Rendal Munroe and Kell Brock at the moment all these fighters could well be fighting for World titles and Sky showcase them but none of them are PPV fighters. Knowing Sky they will try and get a extra fee if they become World Champions.

Seems to be talk of a Murray/Khan fight possibly on the cards, I`m a big Murray fan myself but feel Khan`s style is all wrong for John, be interesting to see what weight they go for if it happens.

One of the best fights i've ever seen.

I'll never forget watching this live

That fight should of happend years ago Khan and Warren avoided this fight for so long. I cant see Khan dropping down for the fight and I wouldnt like to see Murray move up to fight Khan IF he is not struggling to make the weight there is no reason why he needs to jump up a divison just yet.

While Paulie still seems to be in talks with the Khan team. Hes only offering Paulie £150,000 for the fight which isnt a lot of money for a World title fight. When you think about the money that the fight will make give or take £3 to 5 million when they take in PPV sales and fight tickets. So you can see why they are looking for a better deal. Peterson was looking for 4 times that for the fight with Khan.

Did anyone see Terry Flanagan fight last night? I've mentioned him before an unbeaten Manchester lad. Was fighting Ian Napa last night but I think Napa pulled out.
Ian Napa, The 32 year old former 2 times British champion, and European Champion pulled out midweek, the official reason, was Flu. The replacement was Najah Ali, I think that was the guy’s name. Flannagan stopped him 20 seconds into the 2nd round, It looked like Ali dislocated his elbow or something similar.

Cheers mate do you think Flanagan is a serious prospect?

Napa would have been a good barometer of where the lads at presently IMO. Napa lost his European bantamweight title to Jamie McDonald (Top of the bill on the Doncaster card who made a cracking second defence on saturday beating Belgian boxer Stephan Jamoye in a close contest with scores of 115-113 114-113 114-114 despite having a point deducted in the 11th round ) on a split decision, Jan 2010.Flannagans corner seems to be going for some big names. Fair play and good luck to them. I hope they do well and are successful.

Khan's just been on SSN, saying if mcCloskey was confident of winning, he'd take whatever purse, just to get his hands on the world title. I agree with that.
