I get reassessed every two to three years so i know the system very well . Gov figures , last time i looked, show 0.7% fraud in the benefits system, that includes mistakes made by the dwp themselves . The right wing media would have you believe that everyone is playing the system , it is just not true

Thanks, the dwp balls up a lot of payments , every time they over pay and have to claw it back or under pay and have to put that right it counts in those figures . Fraud is tiny but like immigrants the red media and the tories blame those on benefits for everyrhing

The figure will be higher than quoted and the figures quoted after a quick scan of 5 billion is a lot of money.
I think the disabled get treated quite badly in this country but posters quoting the fraud figure is disingenuous.

The problem has always been give no incentive then plenty of unwarranted claims go through, give it to a private company with sweetners and they act like nasty cunts with pound signs in their eyes.

It's also sad that people will blindly dismiss the concerns of other groups affected by govt decisions but get angry when the knock may arrive at their door.

I think the old divide and conquer is still strong in this country.

And the much bigger point is that benefit fraud is a drop in the ocean compared to tax evasion/avoidance in the private sector and waste/corruption within the public sector.

True, but it’s interesting how benefit Fraud (which will literally be less than 1% of Tax Evasion/Avoidance) is spoken about in the media more regularly.

It’s a blatant attempt to turn all of us on each other while the super rich continue offshoring their wealth.

It has always been there. Rightly or wrongly. Nothing to do with social media, some news channels or whatever.

My Grandfather, in about 1960, disliked the guy next door (this was in the old terraced streets of Salford) who never did a days work because of a bad back but still managed to beat the shit out of his wife every night. Until my Grandad told him that if he ever heard it again then he would do the same to him.

I agree apart from the 1% part, how would they know? If they are trying to cut benefit fiddling there must be people claiming that they currently have down as legit otherwise who are they going after?
For instance if I'm faking an ailment and getting benefits I'm currently classed as genuine. You see why the figure is nonsense.

We know that the self employed avoid a lot of tax but the govt and no-one else could actually give a figure on it. Anecdotally we know its gonna be a lot of money but that's about it.

It's undoubtedly a very emotive subject.
And for those who are genuine (like Kaz seems to be) it's hard to see that there might be those who aren't.
But they definitely exist.

People say benefit fraud is peanuts on here but by the government's own figures it's £7.3billion. And as others have pointed out could be a lot higher. That is clearly a lot of money and to suggest otherwise is nonsense.
