The Labour Government

At the end of the day we have the highest public transport prices in Europe. In 2022 when the last survey was done I think out of 36 cities across Europe London brum and Manchester sat 33rd 34th and 35th.
We continually pay more for shitter services.
It's just another regressive step.

Now don't be silly. Tories' £2 deal expires in December with no commitment for any extension, so £3 is still cheaper than the average fare. It's still a cap, so up to bus companies whether to charge less for shorter journeys.

Who stopped councils subsidising bus fares in the first place? Thatcher. Fare in the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire was 5p until she made it illegal.

I thought I read the Manchester fares weren't going up though?

I rarely get a bus (had to a few weeks ago though as the Metrolink was out of action because of essential repairs for 6 weeks) but I only paid 2 quid a trip. Even if I got the bus every day to work that would only amount to.......20 quid a week. OK, I get it now ;-)
Those bloody pounds mount up!

They are weekly tickets for the bus and tram combined, so nothing to do with the single journey cap.

It’s mooted that the minimum wage uplift will be about 6.7%, which is very good considering current inflation levels. Even better is the younger age, up to 21, where it’s estimated to be a 20% rise. That can only be a good thing, even if business might complain a little.

Then there’s the start of them tackling the housing issue. Would like to see this part of the infrastructure spend putting the ownership into regional government hands, with the ‘right to buy’ scheme being scrapped.

Not long to see how it goes and as long as we can see a way out of the current social crisis, it’ll be a good start.

Oh, and getting rid of the double budgets. Having 2 a year gave me no confidence at all as it showed that the government were either micromanaging or didn’t have any control of their own finances.

It expires correct, doesn't mean anything as they have extended it as they can so your first effort is absolutely pointless. Don't be silly. £3 is cheaper than the average fare, it's not it's been capped lower for some time, pointless again, don't be silly. So Thatcher did something in the 80s pmsl pointless deflection. I'll assume you don't know that reimbursement to bus companies for having £2 fares is based on pre-Covid data. The average fare before the capped fare came in was £2.80. Given the increase in bus running costs (esp. wages), commercial average fares would now be well over £3 (and the taxpayers' subsidy would have to be going up to keep it at £2). The scheme is voluntary - so if bus companies don't feel it's worth it, it would die anyway (some never participated, some only did it because competitors on a route did).

The industry has been anxious about an exit strategy for a scheme originally intended to be for a few months.

What Thatcher did is absolutely relevant. Despite this increase in a capped fare, the principle is still the same. If you want taxpayer-subsidised public transport, it would be silly to vote Tory.

You're right, I'm always "making things up" about the price of bus tickets!

I was merely relaying what an expert in the industry was saying were the options once the present subsidy runs out. I'm sure you'll enlighten us on the correct state of affairs.

And what option would you have recommended? How much would that cost in subsidy compared to other options? Would you have said anything at all if the Tories had just let the whole scheme expire?
 
Andy Burnham issued a statement yesterday that the £2 single fare on a bus will remain in Manchester for at least another year.

Bear in mind though in January Manchester buses come under public control for the first time in nearly 30 years and the council are introducing a Oyster Card style travel pass similar to London and those prices haven't been announced yet
 
I have never been a fan of governments trickle leaking information when it suits them. Shame the new government is doing the same. That said I am concerned that the leaks indicate that this could be a damaging budget for SMEs. We shall see.
