I am not sure why you would be excited about this.
The business is haemorrhaging money that the taxpayer is now on the hook for.
Don't get me wrong, for strategic reasons I agree with the governments decision to step in but where are the new orders to justify this increase in production and recruitment?
The economics haven't changed - our energy prices are too high for this business to be viable on its own merits.

Why has the French company EDF increased prices in the UK but maintained them in France

How does Eon bypass the regulator ( it has separate production , distribution and billing company so that if the regulator tries to control one of them it just increases prices in the others

After being lumbered with a buyout of Npower and another company they formed EON.Next forcing their UK Customers to migrate and fund the losses acquired by the acquisitions. (Not the European customers )

I was 15 when Thatcher came to power. My desire to see her out of power never stopped. Neither did my activism within my employment union.
Is it because the majority of younger people these days dont seem to have the staying power and just jump onto any "fashionable" bandwagon?

People are being continually sold a lie. Go to University get a good job. No go and get lumbered with a shed load of debt. Certain sectors are already being hit by AI .. the law being one. Buy a house on a 30 year mortgage and find yourself out of work by the age of 40 with massive mortgage payments to find. I could go on but...

My post was about UK steelmaking , in relation to that I stated factually that UK energy costs were too high to produce steel economically in the UK. That's it.
You have gone off on one about why UK energy prices are high though only in a matter that suits you, I note no mention of net zero commitments and levies. That said, in the context of my post it doesn't matter why they are high , the fact remains they are too high to produce steel at a price that is competitive in the market. That isn't going to change any time soon.
The last post of mine you replied to was about the incidence of immigrant occupation of social housing in London , you tried to conflate this with Russian billionaires buying mansions !

Helped the junior doctors, train drivers, increased min wage, reformed workers rights bills, renters reform bill and a lot of other good stuff, won’t hear it though.

The junior doctors settlement appears to be some smoke and mirrors. NHS trusts are going over budget by £7bn this current financial year - partly down to needing to find the junior doctor pay rise. They are being instructed to cut corporate functions by 50% to balance the books, however it’s not that simple as you need to amalgamate to get economies of scale but they aren’t being given the time to balance the books. The solution?

Doctors and nurses are being offered voluntary redundancy packages. Just let that sink in for a minute - doctors and nurses being made redundant. Mrs MB herself, a cancer specialist nurse, may be out of job this time next year due to funding cuts. ICBs are having budgets cut by over 50% so cutting staff as the DHSC looks to centralise control. Moral is on its arse. It may work out in the long run but it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

Oh and junior doctors are looking to go on strike again.

It’s a bit of a pickle at the minute.

I think you may find that there are a lot of more distinguished people on the politics forum who have no need for those things and lose out on savings when they lower the interest rates.

Personally, I’m all for it. The newer generation may not get cheaper houses like we got, but the opportunity has always got to be there. One of the reasons why they’re so disenfranchised.

Well, I don’t run the countries economy but if the BoE thinks it’s time to drop interest rates, then I’m all for it. So will many who are looking to get their foot on the ladder.

I did hear one adviser yesterday saying that it wasn’t good for housing prices. I disagreed with him. Two of my 3 kids have sold their properties recently and will now be getting cheaper mortgages. Very happy for them.

Junior doctors when qualified on £100k+ per year, train drivers on £70+ per year, my heart bleeds. How about the pensioners on £300 PW who've had their fuel allowance taken. Give your head a wobble.

Most pensioners are on more than £300 a week.

26 months ago the state pension was £45 a week less.

We're short of doctors and train drivers. There's no shortage of pensioners.

Without being flippant, that last point is at the heart of it. How do we afford to pay people 20, 30 years pensions when there are three people paying tax for each pensioner?
