The Labour Government

voice of Columbo

"erm Mr Choppy just one last question. How do you send people to other countries without prior agreement from said country to allow your vessels to dock or your airplane to land? You see there are the Foreign Carrier Permit needed to land a plane and if that is denied you cannot land your plane. With ships if you violate the Law of the Sea and its seen as an act of aggression to enter territorial waters and a breach of that country's sovereignty. I only ask because you have been keen to express the importance of national sovereignty"
Parachutes, give them parachutes!

I don't have the energy to get into an argument over this mate. My position is this is achieveable. Send them back to originating countries that will take them, or to third party countries where they will not.

But this is not my policy and I don't even advocate it. (I might.). I merely said that the small boat issue is easily fixed by any government with the political will to fix it. No prior government has had such desire or determination.

That is my opinion. Your view may vary. Fine by me.

Its just simply not without co-operation - I know you don't want to hear that but the truth is the truth.

I didn't say otherwise. I said we could return people to their country of origin where possible (i.e. with the agreement of that country) or to a third party country where not.

But it's late and I'm bored with it. If you want me to just say OK you win, then ok.

They sent people to Nauru - 3rd smallest country on the planet after the Vatican City and Monaco and Papua New Guinea - they stopped using the latter because PNG became riddled with gang violence and an Australian Court ruled it was illegal to keep using it.

You are comparing apples with broccolli
Does Australia still have a small boats problem?

No, did I say that? What I am saying is that these people have opened up a debate among the British people which had been a long time coming.

What’s the debate ? We’ve had far right parties banging the same drum for decades now, Britain First/UKIP/BNP and various nationalist parties going back to Enoch Powell. Nothing new has been opened up, in fact most outraged marching about migrants wouldn’t even know that under Labour it’s been reduced by 50%

If certain posters are convinced Starmer’s soon to be toast, maybe they should let the bookies know. After all, he’s as long as 6-1 to be replaced this year
That doesn't necessarily mean that he is not soon to be toast. What's the odds on him seeing out 2026?

It really isn't. We'd have to leave the ECHR, relinquish our agreement to abide by the Refugee Convention and repeal the relevant UK laws.

All of that is straightforward if any government with a decent majority has the balls to do it.

Then, start returning every single person who arrives by small boat.

The problem is gone almost overnight. Within days, the boats stop arriving. No longer is there any incentive for any would-be asylum seeker to pay thousands to get to the UK by small boat. It's really that simple. But so far, no government has been prepared to take the necessary steps, because although simple to do, it would cause significant domestic and international condemnation.
Where do you return them to, that is the question. France has only agreed to take a very limited number back. That has always been the issue.

Well it worked in Australia and I think it would work here too.

I suspect we'll find out if I'm right or you are, in about 4 years time because I think Farage will be the next PM and will instigate these measures.
Aus had a backstop of an island to park them on. We don’t.

Put them all in old Trafford to watch the rags they’d soon fuck off back
The Afghani refugee said: “Ive lost all interest in football since Stanley Matthews retired and I couldn’t get a ticket at the swamp. It’s just about oil money now. Have I said that right, Simon?”

When was the last time a government was elected on a manifesto where they promised to increase immigration?

The electorate have sent a clear message in that they want immigration reduced. Every Tory and Labour manifesto says they will do so.

Not only have they not reduced immigration, they’ve increased it. Figure of 1m, 700k net migration are grotesque and fundamentally change the country long term.

Do you think we might want to start reducing immigration numbers to subdue the far right? deliver what they were elected to do for once?

Net migration fell sharply in 2024, from the unusually high levels seen in 2022 and 2023

Net migration in 2024 was the third highest year on record! These people want remigration.
Well if 2022 and 2023 were the first and second highest, it's obviously fallen.

And if the government persists in this visa nonsense it will fall further, but it will not help public services.

Nothing new, I agree. What about a Party which has a manifesto in place for a Department of Border and Homeland Security. A Department staffed and tasked with developing firm systems to decide which qualified people are needed in this country, how much money they bring and are likely to earn, Australian style. A dedicated, fair Asylum Policy. A manifesto that states any crime committed after being accepted into this country will result in them being deported back to where they came from.

Introduced by the Blair Government (for offences punishable by 12 months or more in prison) failed to be implemented by the Tories.

Now proposed that we immediately deport and we don't issue visas for countries that refuse to accept.
