Rival fans' views on City and their fans (and whether they c
First post here, having been reading your forums for a while. I actually wanted to start a new topic, but it seems that's not allowed until a good few posts. So I thought I would post here as I am a Spurs fan.
A few of us (fans of various clubs) were having an interesting chat in the pub last night, which ultimately prompted me to start this topic. We were discussing in general about how various football fans view other clubs and their fans, and then spoke about our views on City at length. We also discussed how we felt about how others felt about our own club and fans. What I found interesting was how much most of us DID care about how other fans felt about our club/fans. I'd never really thought about it, but I realise I do care about how other football fans perceive Spurs and their fans. As we spoke quite a lot about City (a team obviously many football fans now talk about) and as this forum has quite a lot of fans of other teams, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread where these fans gave their views on City/fans and the fans talked about whether they care.
For me personally, I only know one Man City fan particularly well, so it's hard to make too much of a judgement on them as a whole. This particular fan is as down to earth as they come, and we've had some great banter about football over the years. We were in the same pub watching City v Spurs in 2010 and gave each other plenty of (light hearted) stick. When the game finished, he came straight over and said "well done" and bought me a pint. Obviously gutted himself, he was very gracious. I find it interesting that, largely as a result of this one chap, I have a fairly positive view on City fans that I doubt would exist if he was a prat. I also (as many Spurs fan have said before) feel quite some empathy with them as a team that has been largely overshadowed by the achievements of their biggest rivals in recent years. Also like many I had some respect for their attendances during their years in the lower divisions.
What I also found interesting from our discussions last night was how many fans really hate the success that Man City are enjoying/are likely to enjoy because of the way it has happened. And yet not one person in our discussion would admit they were jealous, apart from me.I don't understand this as most football fans I know well are quite happy to admit to being jealous of other clubs that are succesful.
I was jealous of the success Man U (sorry, "the rags") had. I was jealous of the success Ar*enal had. I was jealous of the success Chelsea had. I'm jealous of the fact that Man City have benefited from a huge injection of wealth and have some real superstars in their team and are likely to be a major force for the forseeable future. It makes no odds to me how they acheive their success. As a fan, I want my team to win stuff and watch a quality team play quality football. I couldn't give a hoot how we achieve that. I also don't enjoy other teams being succesful, regardless of how they acheive that success. I would be no more or less jealous of City however they had got where they are now.
So why is it that some football fans can dmit to being jealous, while some can't? Does anyone have a view on this? I'd also be interested in how City fans feel about what other fans think about them. Do you care? Personally, I do care. I love it when fans of other teams speak highly of our current team and the football we play, and don't like it when people say they don't like us, or don't like us fans. Is that unusual??
Would be great if this could be given it's own thread, if anyone is interested in discussing these things.
