The UK Smoking Ban

Dicks don't like to acknowledge things like that though - They'd rather squeal in (percieved rightous) indignation at smokers, for some reason that makes them happy.

I fail to see how not wishing to expose a non-smoker to the possible risks of contracting cancer (however slim) can be construed as indignation toward smokers.

That is a perfectly reasonable viewpoint which does not require any intellectually challenged insults in response.

I think it is fair to say that like smoking, asbestos has been subject to fairly stringent regulation in recent years to attempt (like smoking) manage a perceived risk as best as possible. I'm sorry if that doesn't fit with your view of how the world should operate.

again, this is crap. Yes there are stringent processes in place for asbestos, but they are not entirely policed and left open to personal experience, usually too late for the inexperienced person who stumbles across the asbestos during their works.

and i'm talking about airborne asbestos that has been allowed to escape into the atmsophere and air we breathe; this is non-controllable once allowed to escape to atmosphere....over the last 10-15 years, the north west has seen a massive rise in asbestos polution in the air, mainly due to most of the old cotton mills being either demolished or renovated

and i can almost garauntee that within the next 20 years the manchester region will see a sharp increase in Mesothelioma related deaths

fact, but dont let that get in the way of a good put down

What I (and others) are trying to say though is, given the amount of pollutants in the air, smoking regulations are just completely missing the fucking point. I don't give a toss about indignation towards smokers, I don't smoke myself, I'm just asking, if people are oh so righteously indignant about possible exposure to carcinogens, then why is it only smokers who are singled out when the truth is that we are all breathing in god-knows-what on a daily basis?

Where's the controls about car fumes & factory emissions & Chernoble fallout & the million and one other things that we're all breathing in on a daily basis?

Car fumes? How about:

Public Service Vehicles (Conditions of Fitness, Equipment, Use and Certification) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2005/3128

Public Service Vehicles (Conditions of Fitness, Equipment, Use and Certification) Regulations 1981/257

Local Authorities Act 1996

Air Quality Standards Regulations 2010/1001

Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2010/2060

Road Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2009/717

Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2009/1806

Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Great Britain) Regulations 1984/981

Motor Cycle Silencer and Exhaust Systems Regulations 1995/2370

Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Great Britain) (Amendment) Regulations 1994/2190

I've got a load more if you want them.

Asbestos anyone?

I dont & have never smoked & it makes sense keeping it out of enclosed areas, but this paranoia about what other people get up to in there own time & space is stupid,
I have been going to football for over 40 years & I honestly dont ever remember thinking or anyone telling me I smell of smoke?
I dont hate smokers, they are just people who enjoy doing something I dont, no better no worse,
If smoking dissapeared tomorow the Nigels would have to find something else they didnt like to start moaning about, Drinking that can be a bit of a problem lets stop that,
To just keep banning things in case they are a bit dangerous or annoying, where are we going to end up (no doubt the Nigels on here will tell me in a safer place, but christ its going to be boring).

The Irish smoking ban is in over here now 7 years and its great. A lot of pubs have been creative over here by opening up a bit of a balcony for smokers to go out to if they are upstairs in there pubs. Also when eating food now its brilliant no fucker smoking beside you when your eating. Come the summer days sitting in a beer garden nothing but smokers all around now if only they could bar smokers from smoking in Beer gardens that would be great.

In actual fact absestos related conditions are due to peak in about four years and then fall, and the reason it will decline after that is due to controls on its use in conjunction with much improved record keeping both via legislation.

lol...an mot every year does the trick then??

i too can bang on all night about regulations, as part of my job, one of the qualifications i have is as an asbestos surveyor

all the asbestos regulations you will stipulate relate entirely to asbestos found within buildings and the control of that asbestos to prevent it's escape into the atmosphere

you're totally missing the point mate.....the asbestos has ALREADY been released into the air

And what?

Still gotta breathe the fumes in, regulated or not... And show me a single road on which there's no cars allowed?

Simple truth is - Car fumes are far more pernicious than cig fumes. Acknowledge it or not, it's still the truth.

-- Wed Apr 06, 2011 9:44 pm --

This guy's got a point - once asbestos has been broken, all bets are off.
