VAR Discussion Thread - 2023/24 | PL clubs to vote on whether to scrap VAR (pg413)

Would you want VAR scrapped?

A completely independent VAR body is required made up of ex-players, they are the ones who know exactly what goes on during a match.
Those 2 sets are mutually exclusive, mate.

Show me an ex-player who doesn't still possess the tribal connection to his ex-employer and/or hold grudges and deep-seated opinions about other teams, and I'll show you some pictures of me kissing my own arse!

Imagine the VAR room made up of rio ferdinand, steve G, Ian Wright.... YEah no complaints there.

Stupidiest idea to get traction ever.

VAR has taken game officiating backwards and we all known that. Thats the be all and end all for me.

how is it determined the games gone backwards ? out of interest.

If anything since introduction of VAR, the games gone more global, higher revenues, higher stadium capacities and record TV viewership's.

Mike Dean proving again what a fucking narcissist he is. Imagine coming out and saying that and thinking it'd be ok. Not only that, he's ADDED further pressure and scrutiny to his mates. I'm sure Taylor will be thrilled the microscope will be on him now this weekend.

I've said it many times but VAR being operated by these clowns opens their little boys club up to manipulation. Emotional calls and what is (in my opinion) clear match fixing are shafting fans and clubs on a weekly basis. Independent regulation needed.

Personally I thought the podcast and Deans comments were very honest and showed it to be less likely to be corruption - it’s inability to perform the role to the levels required for reasons like the ones Dean talks about, which ultimately led to him leaving the role.

If you’re talking about honesty in the moment, then that’s where I think having more than one person in the VAR booth may help. Clearly if you start from the perception that they’re all corrupt, that wouldn’t work either though!

Forms of corruption below.
  • 4.1 Bribery.
  • 4.2 Embezzlement, theft and fraud.
  • 4.3 Graft.
  • 4.4 Extortion and blackmail.
  • 4.5 Influence peddling.
  • 4.6 Networking.
  • 4.7 Abuse of discretion.
  • 4.8 Favoritism, nepotism and clientelism.
It’s corrupt, very few are the expected brown envelopes.

AI powered technology was used to speed up VAR offside calls at the World Cup. I read recently that the NFL was investing heavily in its utilisation.
It has to be the way forward to remove the clunky and inconsistent human element.

As post above mentioned he was being totally honest and open on how he dealt with that specific incident, he panicked and didn't send the ref to the monitor and deeply regrets it - I don't see anything that hints towards a golden envelope and dark powers to manipulate results, just human error and highlights the pressure the officials are under.

All for independent reviews and more transparency for sure though.

A police officer sees a car driving erratically but after recognising the driver & assumes he’s on the way back from the pub & doesn’t want to embarrass him by breathalysing him…….

I am a bit slow to jump on the AI bandwagon granted, but it seems everything has to be "AI" these days. Exactly what was AI about the offside calls at the WC?

Don't think drink driving is quite the same as a hair pull in a football match which without VAR would have gone unnoticed anyway. it won't from now on.

Halfcentury

Bet you are faster than me. I’m a proper luddite

this link explains how AI was utilised at the WC
