VAR Discussion Thread - 2023/24 | PL clubs to vote on whether to scrap VAR (pg413)

Would you want VAR scrapped?

For me the games gone when they can't even get the most basic of on-field decisions correct.
I really don't like knocking the refs as they do have a tough tough job with the speed of the game, hostility of the crowd and the players bending the rules as much as poss. No way could I be a ref.

but when you see a massive deflection and it goes wide then the ref just points for a goal kick, or a throw in decision and you know the lino doesn't have a clue so he's standing there for a few seconds deciding which way to GUESS, blatant no contact diving given as free kicks etc … then for me all these things add up to be rather ridiculous.

I don't want VAR controlling every aspect, that would be ludicrous. but just for a ref to very QUICKLY check on something he isn't sure of would be preferable for me than just guessing. IMO.
Unfortunately referees are not reffing games anymore but relying on VAR to help them . Whilst you have twats like Atwell sat in Stockley Park pontificating and coming up with outrageous decisions that could affect a teams whole season the validity of the whole system comes into criticism and whilst the idea of it should be an asset to the game the way these idiots use it makes the games more of a joke. Even the normal fan can see these decisions are just plain wrong and Webb should be sorting these poor officials out but sadly they seem to be unaccountable

Add in the rumours that City have proof that somebody senior at The Premier League has been quoted as saying City can’t be allowed to win the league for a fourth time to the equation. The decisions are supposed to be wrong. For those who choose to see, it’s corrupt. For those who refuse to see, it’s ineptitude on a mind boggling scale.

This is what VAR has introduced though. The very introduction of VAR has led to :
Every single aspect of the game being micro-anallised.
Ref's not making calls because someone else will do it.
NO ONE making calls because of the confusion and sloped-shoulder attititude.
It has changed the very way that referring is done and changed it for the worse.
It hasnt improved the game overall.

The overall look and feel of refereeing has changed for the worse because of VAR being introduced. It needs rolling back,l re-thinking, and for its supporters to stop trying to prove to everyone that VAR has improved %20 of decisions making because thats insignificant when we now cant enjoy the game.

Chris Evans got it right on the radio today.
Make games longer so more adverts.
More interesting for Yanks.
More controversial decisions.
Look at f1.
Race lasts 90 minutes but they drag a weekend out of it.
Won't be long till its a 2 hour game played in quarters.
They are saying now var to look at corners and throw ins .
The games gone and getting worse every week
I get this.

Can see in future ads squeezed in during a VAR.

Anyone who has ever played football knows that Fulham's 2nd penalty was never a penalty.
Yes theres a tiny bit of contact but never enough to take the player down, he dived. What happened to the higher bar for contact we were all told about at the beginning of the season where several "contacts" in the penalty area were waved away. How Atwell can't see that tells me he shouldn't be refereeing or VAR on Premier League games (not that I didn't know already thanks to his temporary suspension of the offside laws last year at Old Toilet). THe fact the referee gave it on review when he should have said "nah, not enough contact" is also bewildering. They must know at that stage of the game all players are falling over in the box at the slightest gust of wind to cheat their way to an advantage.

Why extend it when they haven't got it right just now?

A helpful tool to assist referees in a fast flowing game is being morphed into a quest to get every decision "right".

The very best thing they could do now for VAR is to empty the room at Stockley Park to just the video guys and if and when a ref wants to check something let them help the ref view the relevant footage pitch side under mic.

Should take seconds.
Same as every decision.
If its a clear and obvious error it should take seconds.
Not 4 or 5 minutes
There are about 250 "decisions" in a football match. About 20% are line calls (throw ins, corners, etc). Unless the video room do it live "in play" the process of stopping the game, reviewing the footage and relaying to the ref won't take seconds. And if they do it in play they might need several more people reviewing incidents as if you are looking at one you can't keep your eye on the game. It's a really daft idea IMHO

Yep and fuck the match going fans.
They can sit there not having a clue what's happening.
The tourists and fans in posh seats will get tv reply so there ok
Wouldn't surprise me.

The "premium" seats get the info whilst the rest of us are singing what the fuck is going on whilst the broadcaster put suitable ads in half the screen as Attwell has gone for a shit before deciding at Stockley Park.

Just a fan from each side sat in var would come up with more sensible decisions
Should have a panel of 4 people like on tv shows.
If its 2 2, let Simon Cowell or ootsee mebootsee have the deciding vote.

Its a ten from Len

That ginger twat never gets anything right when it comes to football, he’s a Dipper as well and slagged us off on Radio 2, I wouldn’t listen to that **** if you paid me.

But VAR doesn't lead to more adverts.

The only TV issue with all the extra time, came during the World Cup, when they had to change tack mid tournament as the TV companies didn't want games lasting 10-20 minutes longer.

Drinks breaks or tactical breaks I can see being wanted by TV, as they would be a set time, and nothing would be happening, but VAR is usually analysing key moments in matches, and for the viewers they're probably the time when most attention is paid to the game.

I’m not refusing to see but until I see proper proof of corruption I’m not going to call it. If City have proof then they should call them out on it until then it’s all conspiracy theories

It does on Supersport (SA) Nowtv (HK) and premier
