There is always a surprise team and I believe it will be an African team reaching the semi finals, thanks to a combination of home continent advantage and some dubious refereeing.

If it happens it will be in the first half of the draw, as the other half is too crowded with top class teams, and Ghana are the best African team in that half of the draw. I can see them qualiying from group D in second place, then knocking England out in the second round at altitude in Rustenburg, before a relatively easy quarter final against one of the Group A teams.

So my main pre-tournament bet is Ghana to reach the final four at 16-1.

I have also had £8 at odds of just under 1000-1 on Betfair for Ghana's lead striker, Asamoah Gyan, to be top scorer. I watched him play in a friendly last week and he's very greedy, which suits my bet, and is on pens. He scored 13 goals in 27 games for Rennes in the low-scoring French league this season, and has 20 goals from 40 international appearances.

Over £7.5k if I win that one, which will send me to America for the pre-season tour :-)

The only bet I have so far is Van Persie top scorer each way @ 33-1 which I thought were silly odds when talkshite annouced them last week, as I see Holland battering teams in the group and them going out in the q/f as per usual.

I have £70 in my paddypower account so will have a look at some weird and wonderful bets with that.

£10 - £4457 World Cup Challenge

The idea is to make 10% profit per game (64 games)

So basically find something at 1/10 or 1.1 and back that or find something at 10/1 and lay that.. If you make more than that on any one game you bank the extra profit and carry on. So you take your extra 10% e.g £11 from the first game and place the same bet on the second match and so on and so on.

Obviously when you get further into the tournament your stakes/liabilities will be huge but ultimately the worst case scenario is that you lose £10 by tea time today.

Sounds great in theory but you ll get to a point where you have won 20 or so on the trot and you ll be needing to put £1000 on something you dont really want to.
