Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

There were three notorious occasions involving Boro at Maine Road.

71-72 FA Cup.
Referenced by former referee Jeff Winter in his autobiography when a number of them jumped into the North Stand and somebody pulled a knife on him.

96-97 FA Cup
This was the game when they attacked a number of pubs on Oxford Road, some of them just full of students and non fighters. I was in the Salisbury and it was utter chaos

97-98
I was in the North Stand when it became obvious that something was happening behind us.
It later emerged that a group of Boro hadn't even gone to the match and a local pub landlord had rung the police after hearing them discussing the idea of charging into Maine Road just as the fans were beginning to leave.

For example, Leicester City fans vandalised a train in 1934, and several trains were damaged in 1955 and 1956 by Liverpool and Everton fans.

From wiki
There was a battle between Red Stsr Belgrade and Leicester’s Baby Squad on a train in the 90s. Obviously, building on their 30s work lol

When was that?

I've read books, that haven't been about football hooliganism, that have said there where mass fights between "football fans", basically one area against another going back well over a hundred years ago at football games.

Not necessarily big clubs, but town against town fights.

More local then than travelling across the country but it's always been going on.
Pretty sure I remember reading that Milwall used to have major trouble in the early 1900’s? May have had their first ground closure that time too? Then again I am an FOC and I may well just have imagined it

The very first travelling ‘firm’ in history was in bare knuckle boxing. A gang called The Nottingham Lambs followed a fighter called Bendigo/Abendegno around the country
They wore silk scarves as a uniform/calling card from the East Midlands lace and textile industry and caused absolute carnage wherever they went, often linked to betting
I shall have a look at that. Cheers

I like to read up on such things. Darby sabini was another who had gangs with him on the race courses but that would have been more to do with organised crime.

The truth is much better than the utter bollocks that was The Peaky Blinders

Their ground was closed in the 1930s for 2 weeks after crowd violence.

Edit: They've been at it for over 100 years.

Newcastle put huge flag up very early doors at the Lord Lyon and had large number their lads inside. City pulled it down and tried to set fire to it. It was the day they beat us 1-0 Shearer header. Carnage after game City attacking then. Remember a load of baking trays being emptied in a butty shop on Claremont rd and then being used to hit geordies over head.

And one game over Easter, must have been about 76/77 when they went into Windy corner before kick off

If all of this had gone on your cv when you were starting out, on your career ,you surely wouldn't have been held in the same high esteem that you currently enjoy !!!
