Metrolink to / from Etihad

The people in charge of that chronic organisation are brain dead.

Normally for a night match you would get direct trams back to Altrincham from the Etihad, but because of the Market Street and Shudehill closure you had to change at any of St. Peter's Square, Deansgate Castlefield or Cornbrook to get the Altrincham tram.

I bloody hate that company.

I mean they can’t go direct to the ground from every line.

Not that stressful just to jump off one and back on another at Cornbrook is it?

The service, Altrincham to Piccadilly has been going for 20 years +.
When the Ashton section was built the service continued onto there.
No one had a problem. Yesterday, not realising the Met idiots were being arseholes I got the Alty- Bury tram and changed at Cornbrook for the one to the ground.

At the end of the match I walked back, like I'm ordered to by the boring bastards on here, to Piccadilly station. The only trams showing were 2 to the Trafford Centre and one in between to Eccles.
There was no one to ask why Alty was not showing.
It turns out the Met wankers, for no reason have decided not to run that service.
There was no-one to ask, you just had to guess and as for your smug reply 'they can't go direct from every line' well they have been doing since the Alty Ashton section opened and there is nothing to stop them continuing to do do (apart from the couldn't be arsed policy)

It's a disgrace of a company.

Thank you for backing me up, I could not get it through to Stephen230 that they had changed what they normally do without a valid reason.

You literally gave the reason in your opening post. There’s no trams currently running through town via Market Street.

So the Altrincham trams are running via Exchange Quay to Bury.

Not sure if you’d class that as a valid reason. But it’s clearly a reason.

For no reason.....

It's a fucking wonder some of you manage to find your way home at all....
Again like Stephen 230, a strange reply.
A service is meant to be regular, both with the times and the destination.
If they change either for no reason and no announcement then it makes it very difficult for people to get home. One way would be to ask staff but there were none at Piccadilly.
There was one at St Peters Sq. but he didn't know anything.
So yes it's a fucking wonder I got home.

The Altrincham tram has never run on Market Street. It ran from Altrincham, Peters Sq. via Piccadilly Gardens and Station, the Etihad and to Ashton.
This route is still open as I used it to get to the ground (changing at Cornbrook)

There has been no explanation, that I know of, why they have stopped running it. There is certainly no logistical reason why the buffoons have stopped it.

The Alty to Bury direct tram used to run through Market Street years ago. Not sure about now though

Edit. It still does according to the Bee app.

I think the one thing we can all agree on is Metrolink could and should be doing a lot better. The matchday service to and from the Etihad is awful. Irregular routes, tram intervals, cancellations are some of the problems to name but a few.

The incompetent management is only part of the problem. It’s not fit for purpose by design, any mass transit system that shares congested roads with taxis, cars and thousands of pedestrians is doomed to failure. It can never work properly without radical restructuring of the people and vehicle flow on matchday/concert nights

Too many people use the tram just to make the Etihad-City centre trip. In midweek, I walk home and I am often in St Peters Square when trams roll in from the Etihad and people pour off. I agree that the Metrolink is inefficient but there is no money to do it properly (like Shanghai).

Metrolink isn’t (probably not on purpose) designed to be long haul across the city. It works very well for short journeys; half a dozen stops tops, it’s decent.

Anyone needing to get across the city run into trouble where the service slows down due to - like you say - congested roads with taxis, cars and thousands of pedestrians. Around Wythenshawe and around the city centre, Mets are painful to be on they’re so slow.

Buses are often hindered through poor road/pavement design with utterly useless (apart from for dogs to shit on) grass verges on pavements and cars parked on both sides of the road, in the road, on bus routes, slowing buses down.
Those grass verges need tarmacking over and car park spaces being laid over them, which will clear parked cars from the actual road and allow buses to run down the road more smoothly.

The transport system around Manchester is actually quite big, but it’s bloody awful.

Yes I accept that. We are talking about the direct tram that should run, it always has, from Altrincham to Ashton.
The fuckwits would appear to have stopped it without telling anyone.

Look mate, I’m not a spokesman for Metrolink. If you and the other guy are pissed off with them, that’s fine with me.

I was merely pointing out that there was some reason. They’re doing engineering work on some of the line. They haven’t just messed around with the normal workings for fun.

Also, I was at Dane Road on Sunday and there were posters all over the station about it. So I’d be surprised if the same posters weren’t at all the other affected stations.

There were plenty of announcements. It’s on all the PIDs, it says on the front of the tram where it’s going. There are posters at every station. It’s on the website. It’s not for “no reason” - they’re renewing tracks in Market Street. It’s not just to piss you off or for shits and giggles. With all of the comms that you’ve apparently missed, I’m fucking surprised you get home at night.

I moan with the best of them about the usually shit transport system in Manchester, the tram gets my ire a lot, but this time it's planned maintenance work.

I haven't a clue what a PID is.
Market Street has nothing to do with the Altrincham Ashton line. The line that service uses is open. Trams use it in both directions.
I didn't see any posters at Sale, Cornbrook or Piccadilly train station.
I was stood with City fans who like me had no clue.
It's a wonder with your attitude no one has stuck one on you. Ignorant wanker

No it isn’t, the Altrincham trams from Piccadilly never go anywhere near Market Street. Do you not know their normal operating routes?
