General / Mental Health Support Thread

I'm on the phone to my local health authority's "24 hour mental health line"
I've been waiting on the line ten minutes
The last few times I've rung it's not been answered and it was ringing over an hour

Its a disgrace PF. Hoping you get some help soon. Have you tried complaining to your MP? My relation has and, thankfully, mental health support is a subject his MP fights for. Might be worth a try?

Did you get any reply?
No

No wonder people just kill themselves the hoops they have to jump through when they're at their very very lowest

"Lessons will be learned"
Yeah course

Another long walk in the small hours I expect.
At least I'm certain this is coming to an end I will be helped because I simply have to be

Never give up hope...things do improve, and you look back and remember how low you got and how different you feel.

I had a mental breakdown in 2016 and thought I'd be armed with the knowledge to avoid one in future. But they creep up on you. I think this one is down to basically my dad dying in late 2023 and someone I relied on becoming seriously ill a few days later and still being ill all this time later.
When you're in the middle of it it feels like you'll never get out of it.

Yeah...I've had a few close mates die in the last few years. More recently new year..probably my best mate. I'm going to scatter his ashes tomorrow. As you get older, they all start popping off one by one. I'm billy no mates now haha. Still got family though.

You have to be helped PF don’t stop ringing the number they gave you, the NHS help lines probably work office hours like a lot of advice it’s never there in the small hours when you need it most. I just googled it for you, hope it helps.

AI Overview

If you call 111 in the UK regarding a mental health concern, you will be connected to the Mental Health Hub, according to NHS inform. There, a trained Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) will speak with you, assess your needs, and provide advice on managing your symptoms or connecting you with appropriate services. The PWP can access various NHS and charity services to find the best support for your situation.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of what might happen
  • Initial Assessment:
The PWP will ask questions to understand your current situation and the nature of your mental health concerns.

  • Guidance and Support:
Based on your needs, they will offer advice on coping with your symptoms and may suggest self-help strategies or exercises.
    • NHS talking therapies: For conditions like anxiety and depression.

    • Local mental health charities: Hub of Hope allows searching for charities based on location.

    • Specialist mental health services: Depending on your needs.

    • Urgent mental health support: If you need immediate assistance, the PWP can guide you to 999 or A&E if necessary.
  • Non-Emergency Situations:
If your need is not urgent, you may be advised to contact your GP or explore online resources like NHS Every Mind Matters.

  • Out-of-Hours Support:
If it's outside of your GP's normal working hours, 111 can help you access out-of-hours GP services or other urgent care options

I think in essence I should probably think about ringing 999
Some of my symptoms are very serious (occasional violent fantasies , suicidal ideation)
I should have been helped before things got this bad
Fucking fucking fucking bollocks

Yes you should. I’m lucky. I had a massive panic attack Wednesday morning. My semi-local hospital (it’s 30 miles away!) has a mental health urgent assessment unit - sort of like a mental health A&E - open 24 hours a day. It took 3 hours for me to be seen, but I was eventually.

I’m still recovering today and waiting on a callback from my GP on medication and the NHS team for therapy appointments so other than the initial (very good) assessment at 7 am Wednesday morning, I’m still in limbo. Mental health support in the NHS is a lottery, both in terms of the area where you live and the part of the NHS you’re engaging with.

If you think you might hurt yourself or anyone else, ring 999. I sincerely hope you do get in front of someone soon PF who can really help you. My thoughts are with you.

Do you often get panic attacks?

Do you often get panic attacks?
Not until fairly recently.
Google has helpline numbers It’s awful just offering numbers it’s so frustrating that people qualified to help with panic attacks or other mental health conditions are never available when you need them the most.
Or what is offered is a self help leaflet and a packet of pills

I took the liberty of looking up what a panic attack means ….“Panic attacks can arise from a combination of factors including genetics, stress, and changes in brain function. Major life stressors, past trauma, and even certain medical conditions can also trigger them. While sometimes they appear to come on without a clear trigger, understanding potential causes and triggers is key to managing them”

Make am appointment with the doctor first, incase there is a physical reason or from any other cause

That's good to know you're physically fine. Exercise is good for treating anxiety.
Thanks, and thanks for sharing your story.

I’m not at that stage yet (well, I am at the anxious about the panic attacks stage) and I’m going to rejoin the gym. I find keeping my mind occupied helps.

One the great things about this place is how supportive people are.
