Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

On the early leavers. People go to watch a game. During the game they hopefully get behind the team, sing, shout, celebrate and applaud good play. As the event they came to watch comes to an end they then want to move onto whatever else they are doing that day. Whether that's getting home to watch telly, shag the missus, go to the pub, maybe they have a concert or another event to go to. If the game isn't in doubt they'll leave. Doing so can mean the difference between being stuck in traffic for ages or waiting at bus or tram stops for another hour or more, often in inclement weather Getting away from the ground isn't getting home, many have onward transport to catch and leaving a few minutes early can have a big impact in the time it takes them to do so. People can moan all they like about it but it will never change

Yesterday after match in SS3 there was no waiting to get out the doors,to get in the lift and a queue for the bus back into town.
I was shocked at how empty the stadium was 5 minutes to go.
I have never seen it as bad as it was yesterday.
 
The early leaving was ridiculous yesterday. I think it’s a specific problem with season ticket holders, who don’t enjoy going to games, but go out of habit. You don’t see anywhere near as many people leave in cup games or champions league games.

People must have a lot of money to waste to be able to miss so much football

I used to hate it when my Dad used to make us leave on 85 minutes when I was a kid (Dad’s take note, even if your kids don’t say anything it’s likely they don’t like it, even at night games!)

I recently came across this gem. The Ultras - Curva South - Catania.(Scillies 2nd biggest city)

A few things to note. In no particular order.

The young boy wearing a green top at the front stood behind the wall, joining in and loving the chant. (at the start of the video)

The drummer, not bashing the hell out of the drum, not taking over the chant, but ‘drumming properly‘ along with the chant and aiding it.

The Capo, stood on the wall, no top, Khaki shorts, directing the fans, then letting the fans takeover the chant, whilst he puts the megaphone to his side.

The Catania fans, just like the young boy, loving the chant, you can see it, joining in because they want to join in, not because they are forced to join in by the Capo. Some fans aren’t singing and are happy to just stand and listen. It a really good and catchy chant. Shame I don’t understand Italian.

If we had videos of our fans in the stands (not the fucking concourse) for the games against Bournemouth Palace and Forest earlier this season or from Newcastle Liverpool and Villa at the end of last season, you’d notice that we have a cracking atmosphere at times and we don’t need a drum.

We just need the singing section to sing City songs on the days when SSL3 aren’t doing so to get the crowd going. Have a day away from SSL1 and see what it’s like around the ground when ‘Empty Seats At Home’ or ‘Gerrard Slipped, Suarez Cried’, for example, is being sung there (and nowhere else) but then SSL3 start with ‘Na na na naa na na na naa City’ and see the difference.

A drum at City would be truly awful on CL nights when visiting supporters also bring a drum. We’d have two different sets of fans with a drum twenty feet apart from each other bashing out two different beats. It would sound terrible.

For games like yesterday we just need the singing section to sing like they do for other games, and when they do sing, sing songs the rest of the ground will join in with. What would a drum do other than have a drum beat with loads of people still not singing along to it?

This obsession with Ultras is a bit weird. Get obsessed with City’s fan culture on our best days and just replicate that! When we’re good we’re fucking brilliant, much better than any Ultras dirge. We don’t need or want any band-geek Ricky-Gervais-black-t-shirt wearing dickheads in our support. Dress properly, fuck the drum, and just sing City songs.

The Ultras scene has been around for half a century on the continent yet people talk about it like it’s new. We never wanted owt to do with it in the 70s 80s 90s 00s or 10s, so why now?

Any success we have as a club is 100% down to Sheikh Mansour, Pep and the players and nothing to do with our 'fans' who are in the pub in town or in their car in Stockport before the final whistle blows

One thing that has become more noticeable is that ss3 is the area that gets the rest of the ground going and is often the loudest part of the etihad.

South stand level 1 doesn’t seem to create enough noise, consistent noise or sing many of the songs others join in with.

We could do with starting again and creating a proper home end with the expansion. Failing that we could put rail seating at the back of ss3 and have it there
 
Brentford have all fans staying at the end and a full lap of honour which is great and that's in West London which is bound not too be super easy to get away from the ground. no excuse at all why our fans can not do the same especially on a 3pm kick off on a Saturday

Really? I was in South 3 and it was decent up there, especially 2nd half.

There was a small amount who didn’t stop and the majority joined in quite a few times.

The only negative for me was the early leavers were particularly bad but we live in a free country and got 3 pts so who cares really?

I’m in SS3 and it was really good yesterday.

The new Haaland chant is great.

“What would you do with a big Norwegian, What would you do with a big Norwegian, What would you do with a big Norwegian, can’t stop him from scoring! …. Erling, Erling Haaland, Erling, Erling Haaland… can’t stop him from scoring!”

I've been to every game, and it was the worst league game from where I was in the stadium. I'm not overly invested one way or another, I took a pal to his first ever game, had a few beers, and enjoyed the game.

Ha, I know right! At some point we cross the threshold where the best time to get a tram is after the final whistle because the queues are the worst at the 75 minute till the 90th. Beat the traffic by waiting to the end.

At the core it’s a “that’s enough for me,I need to get home” attitude. You just don’t see that with most clubs. Their fans are more invested emotionally and really want to watch the whole match. They stay because they feel it’s important to SUPPORT the team

That certainly didn't happen when we played them. Loads leave early to get the train as they close one of the stations.

Used to be proud of the City fans, stood there yesterday clapping the team off, I now find them a total embarrassment. Worst in the Premier League.
 
Nothing new or remotely unusual about fans leaving early, back in the 70s i would stand in the Kippax and refuse to look at my watch if we were winning. I would be pleased when I started to see people trooping down the Platt Lane steps as I realised it was getting near the end. Ten minutes to go the trickle became a flood as scores of folk disappeared down the corner tunnel. Maine Rd was much further out of town than the Etihad but I always stayed to the end and enjoyed the walk back to town. The early leavers didn't spoil my day each to their own.
