Fish And Chips

Went in Mr Macs on Lightbowne rd a couple of times late last season on the way into the match

First time, fantastic, pie in the warmer rather than microwaved and fresh chips...really really nice.

Second time, pie still great but fucking re-fried/ last nights chip, truly horrible. If any chippy flogs old chips they should warn you and do them on the cheap as well.

Thought I'd found somewhere nice for a quick chippy tea on the way to the game for next season...I'll need to find somewhere else. Went from 10/10 to 2/10.

Consistency in most places is down the toilet.

Just about to derail the thread.

Best F & C in the world without a shadow of a doubt are made in New Zealand. Always, and I mean always, made fresh for you. You walk in tell them what you want and it is made individually for you. Yes you have to wait but they are always wonderful. I think they always use a beer batter for the fish. Always real chips.

It is a very strange country because we have been in some very nice restaurants and they tend to give you cooked frozen chips. Most odd.

If you have never been then you should try to go to NZ at least once in your life. They are renowned for their pies. I swear you have never seen as many different pies as they have in their pie shops: must be at least 30 different types.
I found a pub off Cathedral Square in Christchurch that served probably the best meat pies ever. Went there nearly every day in the month i was there, on my last day they gave it to me for free. Long time ago and still remember it. One of the reasons i sometimes wish I'd stayed, one of the others was called Lynda, also tasty.

Kumara chips in New Zealand, surely?

Best fish and chip shop ever - Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife. Won many awards and queues do form half an hour before opening. Tom Hanks and Sean Connery were frequent visitors.

When I lived in East Yorkshire (sorry, it was forced on me due to relocation for work), they loved fish, chips, scraps (all the batter scraps from the fish) and gravy. (gravy with fish and chips! WTF? Life got back to normal when I moved back south, Fish (Cod or Haddock, fuck the rest), chips and mushy pea fritters for me. Some friends from my East Yorks days visited and went to our local chippy and asked for fish, chips with scraps and gravy. The chippy asked if they wanted the scraps in a catty bag, and they looked bewildered, and then the chippy said, “do you really want gravy, we usually only do that with pies”. We have a great chippy not far from here, called Chips Ahoy. We add our own condiments as I hate ketchup and wife hates vinegar. We add a little salt but much less than most chippies seem to add.

I lived in Scotland as a student for a couple of years, what they do in chippies up there is beyond belief, deep fried Scotch pies, Mars Bars etc. Gruesome!

So I guess regional tastes vary.

Seniors on the Fylde Coast - they have 6 shops and the entire menu is delicious. Massive portions, that will do me 2 meals.

We moved to Cheshire East a few years ago and we haven't found a chippy we like. So it's Seniors when we visit our offsprings gaff.

My preference when we lived in Cheshire West was the Jolly Roger at Kingsmead in Northwich. Just the ticket.

Down in Devon Drakes on the Babbacombe Rd, Torquay takes some beating.

I love fish, chips, mushy peas, a naughty fat sausage and gravy lathered with about a ton of salt and gallon of vinegar :-) Would probably be my lastcmeal of choice if I was a condemned crim, with a punishment of being sentenced to go to watch a match at Old Toilet, Klanfield etc!!!

Chips at No8 in Prestwich is pretty good if a little on the expensive side. Choice of cooked in dripping (has to be for me) or vegetable oil too.

Doing my own chippy tea this week for the family. Going for a scottish style "fish supper" arrangement.

The chips will be double fried. Maris Piper chipped/pre soaked/washed in cold water.
Then part fried with beef dripping. Cooled/drained, then deep fried in lard.
The Haddock will be split into two pieces (the supper bit), and fried in lard with a thin, very crispy batter.
Proper Marrowfat peas (not tinned), long soaked and then cooked.

Side options will be yellow "English" curry sauce (NO sultanas!)
Chip shop brown gravy.
Mushy peas for the kids.

I'm a bit pissed off that i forgot to order my supply of genuine scottish battered white puddings!
