So many posts saying we shouldn't be haggling over the last "10 or 15 million".

But that's equivalent to £50 on every season ticket for the next 5 to 8 years.

Or maybe it's the signing bonus that pays for Haaland to remove a release clause. Or a £10m punt on a young prospect who turns out to be the next Lionel Messi.

This is not monopoly money and we're already the best club side in Europe. Let's not slag off the management just cos FIFA23 would have got the deal done weeks ago.

Not like the club just made a record amount of money in revenue last season or anything…

Great post.

Football is an inherently different industry. The dynamic of footballs assets (i.e the players), means it becomes an auction. The only way that changes is if a player agitates for a particular club and rules out anyone else.

What makes this deal frustrating is a lack of other bidders in the auction house. In this instance, the asset wants City and City only. The price is set but we won't meet it.

Which of these two scenarios is better?

A.) We walk away and have an extra £15 million to put on the books.

B.) We pay a justifiably record fee and get the best young defender on the planet giving us a decade of service.

It's a fucking no-brainer. It's what makes the Rice situation galling; we've got an extra ~£10-15mil in the bank when we could have had a top class/potentially world class DM in our ranks to play a double pivot or deputise for Rodders should he suffer a lengthy injury. And we could have had him for years.

There's little justification for us to be scrimping given the position of financial power our chairman states we're now in and the stature our club currently holds.
Can anyone link me to where City have stated this:-
The price is set but we won't meet it.

The argument about fees is such utter bilge. You can state that that 5-10m can be used for x, y, z in the exact same way you can state that Gvardiol or whatever player would be the lynchpin in a dominant CL side that creates x amount of consistent additional revenue. It's a pointless argument.

City have valuations of players they won't go above. Most selling clubs have valuations of their players they won't go below unless they are in a desperate situation. If those figures aren't congruent then nothing will happen, other than City will walk away. If City do walk away, then it doesn't signal anything to other future selling clubs - they will have valuations of their players regardless of whichever club is interested because it's mainly made on whole market value. It's a fine strategy and makes sense not to pay more than you think a player is worth but it really doesn't have the massive impact people assume it does. City walking away from Cucurella had 0 impact on the price West Ham wanted for Rice.

I'm sure another 5-8 years of season ticket price rises ;-), the additional revenue from the 6000 extra seats, corporate sales, the new hotel, the new 3000 capacity City Square, the new offices, the new conference facilities, the new and bigger souvenir store, additional revenue from the Coop Live Arena, if that goes to the club, and the huge additional revenues from winning the CL and doing the treble, which the club wouldn't have factored in to the projected revenues, will easily take care of £10mill-£15mill. That's on top of player sales, with Mahrez going, Walker might be going, La Porte and Cancelo will be going, if City can find buying clubs, hopefully Bernardo not going, and all the youth academy player sales.

I doubt very much Khaldoon, Soriano or Txiki will lose any sleep over £10mill-£15mill.

As Soriano proudly (and foolishly) stated to the watching world of football, and player selling clubs, Manchester City will break the £700mill revenue barrier, and be No1 football club financially in the world.

The “huge additional revenues” from winning the Treble are an incremental 50m max, most of which will have gone out on bonuses. We also have a £300m new North Stand to build..

Not having a go at you.

You don't know that. You don't have access to any financial information at the club that backs up your comments. Nobody does on BM.

Expanding a stand hasn't stopped Liverpool or other clubs expanding their grounds from buying players. It didn't stop City buying players when the South stand was expanded.
