He got a lot of offers actually, he turned them down because he wanted to fight for his place. And to suggest he is like Smalling pretty much makes your opinion not worth listening to.
It really is bizarre. I see people on here eulogising about how good the likes of Denayer and Rekik will be, and they're playing for PSV and Celtic. its not a question if he's the answer to are problems, its a question if he's a better option then the current defenders we have playing

To put it simply; if that's a question, then the answer is obviously no for me.
I am genuinely shocked how people forgot how Matija did under Pellegrini. He was completely lost in our defence almost everytime he played, he just does not fit into the system Pellegrini implemented. I'm quite sad for him though, he should be already playing elsewhere (maybe in Italy again).
