I guess that is the safety and efficiency of the new rule covered, in fact, Wunderbar.Spain or Italy are not exactly brilliant examples of great driving!!!
It works in Germany and Austria
I have a sort of mirror thingy on my driver's door that helps me check for cyclists, cars, buses, wagons and low flying aircraft before opening the door.Did you know, that according to that paragon of press virtue the MEN, the new highway code requires you to open your car door with the hand furthest away from it, ie driver uses left hand. This so called "Dutch Reach" (which I must confess to thinking was some continental sexual manoeuvre) is supposed to protect byciclers by making you look over your shoulder. there is no mention of whether the treatment for the resultant back injuries are claimable as a tax deduction. I believe the world is now too far down the road to madness to come back
I like to use my sun roof to wave at cyclists as they pass over me:-)I have a sort of mirror thingy on my driver's door that helps me check for cyclists, cars, buses, wagons and low flying aircraft before opening the door.
mine has a panoramic sunroof to allow me to enjoy the experience for longer :)I like to use my sun roof to wave at cyclists as they pass over me:-)
Are you not checking that it is safe to open your vehicle door before doing so? Another way is to use your wing mirror properly in conjunction with your rear view mirror to ensure a cyclist hasn't been behind the vehicle and moved into an overtaking manouevre. Also when opening the door, don't swing it out fully in one go, just crack it by an inch or two first to allow any unsuspecting victims to take evasive action.Did you know, that according to that paragon of press virtue the MEN, the new highway code requires you to open your car door with the hand furthest away from it, ie driver uses left hand. We are still designing and building vehicles that have dangerous blind spots. In situations where the relative angles between moving objects (vehicle/pedestrian, vehicle/cyclist, vehicle/vehicle) in the blind spot don't change it makes for a dangerous situation where there is a high probability a collision will occur unless the object vehicle/cyclist/pedestrian takes evasive action. No amendments to the Highway Code are going change this.
The 'Dutch Reach' method allows you to observe that the road is clear whilst maintaining control of the vehicle door, but it isn't specifically prescribed in the the Code. The actual wording of rule 239 with respect to opening your vehicle door is;
MUST being the operative word. Rules in the Code which are legal requirements, and which you will be committing a criminal offence if you disobey, use the words must/must not.
- you MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door. Check for cyclists or other traffic
Why can't cyclists just work harder and get a car like normal people, that would solve it.We are still designing and building vehicles that have dangerous blind spots. Around 85% of cyclist over the age of 18 also have a full driving licence and drive, including me ;-)Why can't cyclists just work harder and get a car like normal people, that would solve it.
Cyclists should be limited to the pavement. They seem to use it when it suits them anywayAround 85% of cyclist over the age of 18 also have a full driving licence and drive, including me ;-)
Well stop being an arse and use the licence for what it's there for, then.Around 85% of cyclist over the age of 18 also have a full driving licence and drive, including me ;-)
On the other hand if more people used the bikes they have then to roads would be less congested and they wouldn’t be so fat.Well stop being an arse and use the licence for what it's there for, then.
Turning left as well though. I've been testing the new rule as a pedestrian (albeit a week or two before the advice comes in) and nobody looked like they were about to even consider stopping or even acknowledged I was there to be honest.All these people prepared to mow down pedestrians when you turn right in a car. Let’s face it, how fast are you moving when you turn right most of the time? It shouldn’t be to much of a hassle to stop to allow a pedestrian to cross. It happens in other countries. Spent a long time in NZ and they are much more courteous to other users than us; stopping in car parks for pedestrians, allowing people to cross the road, leaving lots of room for cyclist, I could go on but you get the picture.
