Back in the 60/70's when there was a lot of racist language used casually within all forms of society (media, entertainment, schools, workplace, I've mentioned before I rode a pony called N****r as a child in the mid sixties) it was later deemed more polite to call non white people coloured. In the 80's this became an offensive term and quite rightly we now call people by their ethnic group, Black, Asian, Chinese, Japanese or South East Asian, it's not derogatory but some people who are quick to jump on the racist bandwagon are now offended by the term "black person" in regards to last nights incident, it's absolutely ridiculous, where do we draw the line?
"Non Caucasian, non Asian, non South East Asian, that's the guy I meant to point out" or do we just say "the "black guy" ffs, world has gone fucking bonkers.
Yes two points to make on this: 1) some years ago I heard the film Director Peter Jackson (LOTR etc.) was planning to re-make the 1950s British War film the Dambusters, with all the latest modern effects - I believe there was even a script written by Stephen Fry. It never got into production and I guess possibly because of the name of the Squadron Leader's dog (it was run over on the day of the raid) & was the same name as the horse you mention. There was actually a bit of a kerfuffle in the summer when a gravestone on the RAF base was replaced removing the name and replacing it with: 'The Grave of a Black Labrador Dog'. 2) Yes - I have always been taught that the politically correct term for someone such as Demba Ba is 'black man' not as some people in the older generation might incorrectly say 'coloured' yet weirdly, there is an organisation - the NAACP, which stands for The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People!
It is all getting so confusing and actually, especially with kids, a bit fucked up. I work in an educational role and not so long ago was covering WWII - the home front: evacuation, rationing etc. I was trying to explain about 'spivs' and the 'black market' and as soon as I said that the muttering started (racist....racist.....) Some are always looking to be offended & be 'the victim' so I agree with your post 100%
