To be fair to Gaddafi, we painted him as a baddie when he’d never done much wrong outside Lybia and he liked to go along with it because it made him rich.

It’s likely Gaddafi had nothing to do with the Lockerbie bombing and that it was Syria’s Assad who was the culprit, with links to terrorists from Iran as well, but Gaddafi was paid to say it was him so he thought “sod it!”

I think Afghanistan is providing an example of withdrawal and step back.

I did some academic study of tyrannicide and whether it is a moral duty to go to the aid of people under a tyrant. The best quote (not to hand) was the guy a few hundred years ago who said it was remarkable how willingness to rescue people of other lands was related to what was in it for the rescuers. That I can imagine, but not necessarily what happens without intervention.

Where was America when Zimbabwe was ethnically cleansing itself of white farmers for one. Couldn’t be arsed playing the policeman then as there was no oil to liberate.

I’m actually a big fan of America and half its country folk but the nationalism and tub thumping (that we are even seeing on this thread from the immigrant) is rather churlish.

I get it, you hate the US, but some perspective won’t go amiss.

When you say hundreds of bases you actually mean 90 permanent bases across about 40 counties, including those bases in NATO members along with other security co-operative nations? And who says both China and Russia can’t? You do know both of them have oversea bases as well don’t you? China is currently looking to setup a second base in Africa this one along the Atlantic seaboard - an ocean it doesn’t border - similar to the US and the Indian Ocean. Yes the US is trying to prevent this and in the interests of “all is fair in love and war” it’s a little bit rich them doing so if you only measure it against the US having bases but I’d rather have the US policing the world than the Chinese, all day, every day.

Anyroad I’m sure the residents of Taiwan and South Korea, to name but two, are delighted that the US provides a counter balance to regional powerhouses and would be aggressors.

Some good points and Qatar was very grateful for the fact it houses a US base as it was more or less the only thing that stopped Saudi tanks rolling in 4 years ago.

That said, if you followed me on the pilot forum of which I’m an active member, you might be surprised at my feelings about certain aspects of life in America.

If you find the “perfect society,” let me know, because I probably have the money needed to live there and would greatly enjoy the experience.

No you do right in defending America and my comment was wholly with my tongue firmly stuck in the side of my cheek (you know I’m an expat also - though I believe you consider yourself American, rather than British now).

I don’t get the American hate, especially on a thread side by side with Russia and I’d be defending the US if I were you also, but it’s true they play policeman only when it suits their interest.

If you read the details of the investigation, there was no shortage of evidence that Lockerbie was planned and perpetrated by Libyans and no evidence of Syrian involvement. All the Syria/Iran stuff is based on conspiracy theories not evidence.
