Agree. He tried to make things happen but was quickly surrounded and had no outlet. Kane was abysmal. And with two DMs there was no opportunity to go back and retain possession and the attack.

We were impatient in possession and tried to force things in the final third too much. But Southgate was moronic to take Foden off. The key to us winning the game was more patience and quality in possession and Foden for Grealish was stupid. Both needed to be on the pitch. He ended up switching Sterling to Foden's wing and putting Grealish wide left...where Foden has been best for City. Inexplicable.
Just posted something very similar. The timing of that change was all wrong, disrupting both sides of the pitch just when we were dominant. If Grealish was coming on it should have been either earlier or later and he should have played in the hole.

The lad gets a lot of abuse but that was a penalty just like the Dutch one, but unlike the Dutch one the ref made the decision before VAR looked at it, as for Grealish coming on that was pointless he was always going to get fouled just like all the others with the same result.

When the contact involves players moving in opposite direction, ala Dumfries, it’s much easier to give, and Sterling, alas, now has a reputation of going to ground in the box too easily.

Biggest threat? Christ we must have been really bad. Shite again but let’s defend with nonsense that sounds good. Don’t know how Foden gets subbed before him

Yep and that reputation was built on such decisions but we now have VAR, and it still exists, even the commentators denied it was a penalty before seeing replays showing a definite penalty and then saying he went down too easily, where is too easily in the law book?
Thanks i have had my rant now, i will just cool off with, that god at utd Giggs played 963 scored 168 Sterling 292 games 114 goals for us , brings it into perspective :)

Got to wonder if Southgate secretly wanted a draw and is angling to come second in the group to dodge Mancini's boys

I wonder if it's more the position. It looked like Raheem had just overrun the ball and wouldn't have time to play it, so it would be harsh on Scotland to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Those are the worst kind of pens for me - even if legit, but where the attacking player is going nowhere.

Yes we were really bad so lets defend with some Shite, he was not the worst, the player the media wants to sell to us for a £150 million was far worse, Foden probably got taken off because he was knackered after carrying 10 others all match.

Could be, but you also see them given when the keeper makes contact with a forward near to the byline, when you know that the forward hasn’t got a cat in hell’s chance of keeping the ball in play.

It was a typical Sterling performance really, using that initial burst of pace to get clear, slowing down, allowing the opposition defenders to get back, then clumsily attempting to dribble through them all.

They get given all the time- but I see them as part of the "modern penalty" phenomenon. In the past they probably wouldn't be often given because there was no danger of a goal, but these days there's less flexibility.

In some ways that's a good thing, as it's too hard to have both "common sense" and "consistency", but there are a lot of 5-10% goal scoring situations, than end up as penalties, which isn't great.

Was nowhere near as bad as quite a few others for England last night.
I did laugh though when one of the commentators said something like " his control let him down then, not something that usually happens with Sterling ".......really ???
Too many of them are behind the curve. Unappreciative when he was playing really well 2/3 seasons ago. Then fawning over him to display newly acquired anti-racism credentials. And now showing no knowledge of Sterling’s nosedive in form. They probably listen to each other rather than watch football.

Yup. In slo-mo, and from a different angle, I thought it was a pen. In real time it looked like a dive. Karma when you go down with every contact.

Good post
